Tory Time is Over

Via Draftaleader, we have news that John Tory realizes he took some bad advice. He is now contrite and humble - begging for our support:

"I'll be a wiser and stronger leader for having had the experience of the 2007 election when we did lose and I did make some mistakes," Tory admitted.

The Sun Times article goes on to say that "Tory has since promised not to raise the issue again in favour of focusing on economics and core public services."

All very well and good, but the fact is that Warren Kinsella has not promised not to raise the issue again, and therein lies the problem. (edited - thanks, 'Anon')

John, the tribe has spoken. It's time for you to put out your torch and go.

It seems from the article that Tory is blaming Mike Harris for the loss of paying PCPO members.

There is another possibility.

The lurch to the left by Eves and then Tory drove away the only real active riding level citizens. This just left the core political groupies.

I think you mean that Warren Kinsella hasn't made a promise NOT to raise the issue again. We know he will - Tory's labelled, but NOT raising the issue again is the wrong plan for Tory actually.

The school choice issue needs to be front and centre again and often.

As we saw this week plenty of mileage can be had from pointing out McGuinty's hypocritical nature on the subject.

As a conservative I don't want the leader of the party going silent on the issue.

If Tory is suggesting that then he's already taking the wrong path in my books and I might as well stay home next election.

Thanks, Anon. Correction made.

John Tory and his supporters will blame Harris and Eves, they will blame the Riding Associations, they will blame everyone and anyone but themselves.

Tory is just like my ex-wife; she sucked the life out of me and he is sucking the life out of the party.

I had to go to therapy to finally figure out how to get past my ex and now the Delegates will have a joint theraputic session in London where they will get past John Tory.

The only question is how much damage will he do before he finally goes?

Maybe we need a divorce lawyer.

Hey Joanne - my brother must have been at the same Kitchener beerstore that you were at during the blizzard and McGuinty's photo-op reannouncement of a reannoucement.

Speaking with him(a Liberal) yesterday he asked "Guess which dork was at the beerstore in the middle of a blizzard clogging up the line of folks who could have cared less about his annoucement but just wanted to get their beer and go home?"

We know which "Dork" that was, thanks to your blog.

lol! Awesome. And a Liberal to boot! Wow.

If John Tory couldn't figure out that the advice he was listening to was bad, he shouldn't be leading the party. Those running the Conservative campaign, including John, should get some practise running campaigns for class president. If they don't want to continue their loosing ways they should start at the kindergarten level.

Swift, exactly. His own track record on running elections hasn't been very good either.

Joanne, if Tory listens to the base of conservatives it won't matter if Kinsella talks about FBF just as it didn't matter that Tory talked about Dalton's chronic lying. You don't need a new leader. You need a new strategy that appeals to the core support absent in 2007.

Tory is responsible for the tremendous f*ckup of the last election. Joanne, if you recall, we were discussing here in hugely negative terms, about what the FB-funding promise was going to do to PC chances, BEFORE the election campaign officially started.

He's either got a tin ear, or took advice from the wrong people. Time to go.

Do you think Dion will get a second chance after the next election?

I will never vote for Tory, if he hangs on to the leadership.

The campaign is always about the leader. After reading all the summer columnist opinions about how JT would win against DMcG unless he screwed up big-time, he did just that.

That is your choice. I'll continue to vote for the party that is the least disgusting.

However, if Tory hangs on, this blog will not be discussing the next Ontario election.

Is politics really so focused on leadership? Seems like we've gone from trying to focus on strong players, to finding the perfect coach. The perfect coach with a horrible team still finishes last place.

I hardly remember anything about Mike Harris from before his leadership. I voted for The Common Sense Revolution. So did most people I know.

You want someone to sell and then implement policy. You select them at the party level.

The policy must be driven by the populace.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Personally, I think you need a good combination of strong leadership and good policy. Strong communications is also important.

All three are necessary. Right now the Ontario PC party has none.

John Tory is now saying that "He was out paying down the debt". he is now saying that organizationally we weren't where we should have been because some ridings became complacent during the Harris and Eves Administrations. What a crock. John, you were at the helm for 3.5 years. What did you do to change this?

Mike Harris had party debt to overcome.

Mike Harris and the people Mike Harris put around him decided to make a "strategic" decision to "invest" some of the money they were raising for basic organizational needs - office, staff, answering phones.

The policies in the CSR were one thing. The investment into people and infrastructure was another.

John Tory and the people he put around him made the "strategic" decision NOT to spend any money on people and infrastruture.

The Executive of the Party authorized the money to be spent on staff, office and other things - a whole year in advance. The decisions not to spend the money were made by the Tory folks. John Tory's hand picked people if not John Tory himself.

The difference between Mike Harris and John Tory is that Mike Harris never thought that the electorate would vote for "him" personally.

John Tory thought they would.

That is the difference. Some people would call that "arrogance".

John Tory and his people had terrible policy, no investments in people and infrastucture and the branding was focussed around John Tory.

He lost. Poor strategic decisions were made. We were obliterated as a party. The Liberals picked up the first back 2 back majority in 70 years.

The least Tory should have done is step down, call a race and announce that he still wanted the job.

Its time for the grassroots membership to stand up and tell the party administration, this leader and any other potential leader - listen to the membership, this is our party.

I totally agree, Nick.

Tory's still listening with a tin ear. He doesn't grasp the concept that it's not HIS party, it belongs to the grassroots membership. Making the same old moves with the same old people around him means that John Tory once again did a lot of listening (during his "I'm sorry tour) but didn't hear what was really being said. Please, John, don't damage the party by clinging .....resign.

He had better not resign now. I paid my money to be a delegate at the convention in London and I demand the satisfaction of voting him out. The Party needs a decisive vote against Red John in order to set us on the proper course.
