Keith Martin stands up to the school-yard bully

Despite desperate intimidation tactics employed by the Prince of Darkness, Liberal MP Keith Martin withstands the onslaught. This is one gutsy politician.

All we have to do is coax him to move to Ontario, join the Progressive Conservative Party, and presto! - We have our replacement for John Tory!!!

SDA - "There is no right not to be offended".

This is priceless! From the Globe's Blogolitics - Quotes of the Week:

• Liberal spokeswoman Leslie Swartman on a Liberal MPs private member's motion: "This is not the position of the Liberal Party of Canada or the Liberal caucus or Mr. Dion," said Swartman. "We support the Canadian Human Rights Act and will not entertain changes to it such as this."
Only in Canada.

Warrenkinsella.com (I'm not linking to it) on Keith Martin (Feb. 1):
...although some of his constituents might also say they voted for a party's candidate, and not simply a solipsistic oddball who adheres to his party's platform only when it suits him. Then again, Keith Martin has been a Reformer, a Canadian Alliance candidate, an independent, and now he's allegedly a Liberal. If he decides to run under yet another party's banner in the next election, good luck to him. He'll need it.
Nice.

Having no frontal lobe, I had to google solipsistic - The jokes write themselves.

Martin Rayner a.k.a. Red Tory is guest blogging at Scott's - Ending "Hate Speech". Not a bad post until you get near the end.

Dr. Roy links to a Gazette article that shows that MSM is finally starting to wake up.

I'm confused. You mean Keith Martin?

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Sheesh! Yes. Thanks.

Obviously need another coffee.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Correction made.

Pat Martin is a bully-boy himself! And not a very classy one.

Hey Joanne, it's okay. I'm also on my first coffee and avoiding the shoveling of 3 feet of snow out there. I also found this link in which Stormfront.org is happy with Keith Martin. This will be the perfect red herring for the critics to use in order to say the abolition of the 13.1 will lead to Nazism. If you do head to Stormfront, note that it's a white supremacist website and I have no idea if government tracks people who visit that vile thing.

From your link:
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion’s office disavowed the motion and suggested Martin will be asked to withdraw it.

Wow! This could get really interesting.

Burton, Formerly Kingston said...

Withdraw it, I thought that was the party of the Big Tent, the party where dissent was tolerated, if the LPC party doesn't agree with it they can vote against it, is that what they are afraid of, voting against free speech. Come to think about it, I would be afraid to vote that way too. The guy is not advocating doing away with Hate Crimes for pete sakes, he is putting forward a motion to correct a flaw in legislation that in fact only became a flaw after it started to become abused.

Kingston, maybe Dr. Martin should seriously consider my offer.

Could Kinsella be whispering in Dion's ear? And from what angle do you suppose?

Thanks for the link Joanne! This is obviously not going to go away like the media wants it to. Poor Keith is being dragged through the mud now. I hope the Conservatives stand up with him on this issue. I have emailed my MP asking him to support the bill.

Perfect take Martin and his white supremisct friends. It will go well with you anti-woman, anti-choice right-wing nuts!

That's what we need in Canada - more good Christian White values.

Well, anon 1:33 sums it up for the Libs!!

Huge can of Liberal worms just got opened!
Kudos to Ezra and Dr. Martin.!

Let the Lib lips roll!
We need some good footage for the election campaign.

This is definitely one of those times when the Conservative controlled message is a very good thing.

Who knew I was 'anti-woman'?

Speaking of choice, how about this - Getting maternity benefits for choosing to have an abortion! - Hunter has it covered here.

Is this the first time the media has mentioned Keith Martin's motion? Is this what it takes to get the Levant-Steyn stories out front?
The MSM are not only biased they are lazy.

Not sure about that, Anon, but check out the latest update on this post!

Yes, it's much appreciated! Ezra gets called up for possibly spreading hate. There hasn't even been a ruling, has there? But you guys, in typical fashion, go into slash and burn mode. I'm surprised you are not angry with Martin, since he did not call for the entire Act to be repealed.

Ezra should get his costs covered, since the complaint seems unfounded. But that's not good enough for you is it? Off with the HRC heads!

Let the Lib lips roll!

Yes, the old "this is unfair" clip looks a little shopworn. Especially since the response ad will show Dimitri Soudas giving the typical CPC response. "I'm telling! I'm suing! Waaaa!".

Actually, the ad would just have someone reading the lawyer's letter, complete with all the pompous bluster it provides. Then a quote of your meme of the day "There is no right not to be offended" then cut to "Unless you are a spokesperson for the Government". Close with a "1984" style background, something about "all are equal, but the CPC are more equal". Hilarious!

This is definitely one of those times when the Conservative controlled message is a very good thing.
I agree! We see a Liberal MP giving a view that is not the party policy. Good heavens! The sky is falling! Those Liberals, they're so unfair! They talk about things! Not only in the closed door caucus (unlike the CPC where they can't even speak freely in caucus), they talk in public!

They might even decide the law needs to be updated. They won't do some knee jerk "repeal everything" routine though.

Yes, the law might need a tuneup. With a rapier though, not your meat cleaver.

Hahahahahaha!

My understanding is that only the complainant gets their costs covered; not the defendant. Do you have any proof to the contrary?

No, I don't. I don't know. But he should have his costs covered.

That is the kind of tweaking that is needed. Provide better balance. Instead of simply throwing the Act (or part of it) out.

The rapier, not the meat cleaver.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

But he should have his costs covered.

Yes, I believe that is one of Ezra's points.

I'm with him there. He's a blithering troll in my view, but he was hardly exposing anyone to hatred or contempt.

I don't think you'll get much disagreement on that (that he committed no crime). What you will get disagreement on is that we should be repealing laws in haste over this.

I don't agree with the "you're with the white supremacists" meme that is emerging, it is really not helpful. But it is something that needs to be considered with these laws. Should I be free to send mass emails and use telemarketers to "educate" everyone about the Holocaust myth?

I think these ideas, repugnant though they may be, need to be available for discussion, mainly to refute them, so you can't "ban" them. But at some point it becomes like advertisement. I am daily asked, through spam, to consider whether my sexual parts are "good enough". Must I also read every day that the jews make purim cookies out of murdered infants? Some of these groups would be quite happy to provide such material if they only had to contend with anti-spam laws.

I don't have a good answer to this, and I'd really like to see this addressed. The hate laws we do have outside of HRC laws seem to be less than effective.

Where he gets to the end and specifically ensures he slams you? Yeah I noticed that.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Raph, he just finds it so hard to quit me.

Burton, Formerly Kingston said...

Actually lets make this really easy, loser at the commission pays the costs of the whole freaking thing. That should do away with most of the frivolous submissions and lead the serious ones to settlement.

Joanne, Ref your comment re Dr. Roy's post. It's true there are encouraging signs that MSM is getting on board ('Post', 'Gazette', etc.) But, the few MSM stories on Martin's HRA motion I was able to find today all jumped on the dopey 'white supremacist' angle. A bit disappointing. :+[

Well, yeah, but that's what sells papers. I take it as a positive that the story's getting out there, and Dr. Martin is doing an excellent job distancing himself from the fanatics, yet still holding his ground.

Joanne, for another viewpoint (similar to mine) check out Mike Brock's comments to Ezra's "snowball" post.

Well, that's interesting. I see where he (and you) are coming from. It may be up to some stalwart opposition members to carry this one forward.
