Do you know where YOUR health tax is going?

Christina has some pretty harsh words for Dwight Duncan this morning - Duncan Doles out Surplus:

In his fall economic outlook released yesterday, Finance Minister Dwight Duncan reported revenues are up $2.6 billion. Coincidentally, the so-called Ontario Health Premium raked in $2.6 billion in 2006-07 and is projected to bring in $2.7 billion in 2007-08.
( . . . )

So who did Duncan give that extra money to? Hint: He didn't give it back to me and you. No, yesterday the government announced $3 billion in hand-outs -- to businesses. That's right, they're speeding up the elimination of the capital tax for the manufacturing and resource sector.

She call it the 'Reverse Robin Hood' - "Your health tax money goes to give fat-cat banks and other businesses a tax break." Oh, and of course Duncan slips his pal David Miller a "bail-out", according to Blizzard.

Well the Liberals have never denied that most of the so-called "health" premium or tax goes into General Revenues, so her story seems plausible. That fact was highlighted by the Globe during the past election:

...what the Liberals call "a health premium" is really a surtax that goes into general revenues, with only a notional allocation to health care.

Personally, I'm not going to get worked up about this. Uncle Dalton and his well-paid friends knows what's best. To be fair, Ontario does need to do something to mitigate the exodus of manufacturing, but as Christina says, let's call it a business assistance tax or a transit tax or a even a 'keep Liberals elected' tax. But don't call it a health anything when the money goes to general revenues - left to dole out for the most politically expedient cause of the day.

So if your kids have to go without this winter because of the health tax, just feel warm knowing that you're doing your part to bail out big business and David Miller.

It's the Ontario way.

Welcome to four more year in Lemmingland Joanne!

I'm really disappointed in our conservative team. In the leg. they look tired, and uninspired like they're simply going through the motions.

Tory's got to go. For the first time in a long, long time I refuse to renew my membership or donate.

Nope. Not until we get a leader who stops making me feel inadequate for supporting Mike Harris and the CSR.

The one thing that EVES and Tory never learned was that to publicly distance themselves from Harris is to insult a huge grassroot population. Ontario conservatives need those Harrisites to win again.

John Tory must go.

John Tory must go.

Hard to take him seriously when he has to sit up in the peanut gallery.

Randy Hillier is the only one speaking up!
BBH!!!

Howard Hampton is doing a credible job.

John Tory left his supporters in the dust when he decided to surround himself with and listen to paid advisors than grassroot supporters.
He let me down.
I had heard that when scouting for candidates to run ahead of the last campaign that Tory nixed any former Harrisites or failed candidates? If this is true, perhaps the party should follow his lead and insist on a new face? I simply can't support him. Kinsella's got his number now...and there isn't anything that's going to change that IMO.

Yes, interesting that Randy Hillier is proving to be much better at his role than the old farts.

Maybe that's why Kinsella disliked him so much....because he poses the REAL threat to the Liberals.

Will Randy Hillier be the next Mike Harris?

I think Michael Chong would be a terrific Ontario PC leader.

Well, being active is healthy. ;)

re: "Tory vows to stay on" then I guess I'll be staying home next voting day too.

Mike Chong
Peter VanLoan

Both would be excellent provincial pc leaders.

No old boys(or gals) thank-you very much.

I think Micheal Chong would be a terrific Liberal in the House of Commons. "Cross that floor Mike! Come home to progressive Canadianism".

I've had it with Ontario politics....can anyone here recommend a good American blog that's following the campaigns there?

Something intelligent....not just partisan ranting...of lemminglike?

I like being a Fossil too anon. Fossils are grounded in time and history and we learn a lot from studying fossils. You'd think the enviro-nuts would respect all that fossils can teach us.

Fossils of the world...unite!

We fossils will outlive them! Or at least out-propagate them.

Yippee! Do we get free carbon credit coupons with those awards?

Fossil Fuel, manufactured in the Alberta Oil Patch, refined in Sarnia and powering Your car and Your economy - The Kars of Ontario. You will go farther on Fossil Fuel than Karbon Kredits that's for sure. You can't get to Bali without it.

Hey LS,

Didn't Dion get a Fossil award too?

Hahahaha!

Hey - I like being a fossil too. Fossils have been around longer than the Liberal natural governing party.

Perhaps we should be change the chant from "I AM CANADIAN" to "I AM A CANADIAN FOSSIL"

I don't understand either why the Greenies selected the fossil as being a bad thing? Fossils rule!
