Worst news ever

Brent Butt will be pulling the plug on Corner Gas next season. The series finale will air sometime in the spring of 2009.

Brent wants the award-winning show to finish on top.

Contrast this with Sarah Polley's whining on Parliament Hill yesterday. Hunter covers the story here.

I have no idea how government subsidies work in film vs. television but I have a strong suspicion that if it's a good production, people will watch it and it will become successful.

And guess what, Ms. Polley? Something can be a hit without using sex and violence to attract a large audience.

Jackass!

Now excuse me while I go drown my sorrows with a big plate of chili cheese-dogs.

Update: Metro - Polley pleads case:

...But the Conservatives reacted quickly to Polley’s statements, claiming she had a political vendetta against the party.
In the 2004 election campaign, Polley was an active member of the “Stop Harper” campaign, and attached her name to a news release attacking the now prime minister.
“Hard-working Canadians are growing increasingly tired of special interest groups telling them what to do,” Tory MP Pierre Poilievre (Nepean-Carleton) said in a news release. “If famous actors and actresses want to produce materials that are offensive to the majority of Canadians, they can do it on their own dime, not on the backs of Canadian taxpayers.”

Right on.

So now I'm faced with a problem. There were a few other well-known Canadian artists involved in the Stop-Harper campaign. I funded some of them directly by purchasing their CDs and attending their concerts.

It will be easy to deface my Chantel Kreviazuk CDs, but Sarah McLachlan too?

Too bad she's so misguided.

Oh boy. I can hardly bare to read this tripe by Aaron Wherry - The Commons: Ms. Polley goes to Ottawa. Warning - Have barf bucket on standby.

I found that whining yesterday truly offensive. Maybe I should file a claim with the HRC. I don't know whether to call them drooling idiots, or brain dead morons. To use the term censorship, as if to compare themselves to a jailed Cuban journalist who dared to critique Castro, or someone executed in China. These people are too stupid to even be embarrassed. They remind me of David Dingwall, 'I'm entitled to my entitlements', and if I don't get them, then I'm being brutally supressed by the fascist neo cons. My God I despise those people. Like you said Joanne, stop making crap and you won't need my tax money to survive.

I can't see what the controversy is about. The film industry is a business that should be able to stand on its own two feet without relying on handouts. If their product is good, people will come to see it and they will make money. If not, then they will lose money. They knew that when they got into the business.

Our government should not be in the business of funding films with our tax-dollars. Since this is occurring, then the government should at least have a say into which projects it will fund.

Sarah Polley's whining is another example of the mindset of 'entitlement'.

She kept saying that they need the money to be able to 'tell their stories". What if nobody wants to hear them?

So lil' Sarah is all upset. Boo hoo hoo. I think I might find some time to write a post about this and explain how some of the funding works. There is much censorship in the Canadian film industry and much of it concerns people like Polley (ie NDP and far left liberal) dictating who gets funding and what stories can and cannot be told.

Polley might be surprised how many people in the industry are sick and tired of the types of films Polley and her ilk want to keep making.

I'll try to elaborate in a longer post today.

Great, Nicol. Let me know when your post is ready.

I'm sure Polley expected everyone to be bowled over by the effects of her 'Star' appeal. Mike Duffy was almost swooning yesterday.

Ugh.

Anyone see Susan Bonner's rabid attack on Charles McVety yesterday on CBC? Pretty obvious where her loyalties are. Looks like another Liberal booster seeing any chance at the public trough going out the window with the Liberal's chances at forming government.

If only she used the same tone and attacked Polley as well on her position.

Questions Polley should be asked.

1. What was your income last year?

2. Have you ever made a movie that would not qualify for the tax credit(e.g. porno)

3. Why should taxpayers pay towards a movie that will have an audience in the hundreds, with no chance of ever turning a profit or breaking even?

4. Why are you saying it's censorship. Film producers are still free to make whatever type of movie they choose, this is about the use of taxpayer funds?

Good questions, Paul.

I'm going to work out now, and will let comments through later this morning.

And you can blame Richard Warman for that.

Thank for the link Joanne!

Polley can make any film she wants, I just don't want to be forced to help pay for it. Funny how all our Canadian talent moves to the States when they make it big.

Corner Gas had a good run and is going out before jumping the shark. Credit to Brent for knowing when to pull the plug and saving us from:

Corner Gas: Lacey's Place
Corner Gas: Emma Loves Oscar
Corner Gas: RCMP
Corner Gas: Regina

Reid - lol!

We'll have to do a tribute when the finale rolls around.

Thank for the link Joanne!

No problem, Hunter! I've had it with celebrity talking-heads.

I've been racking my brain to come up with a sequal for Hank. I finally came up with:

Corner Gas: Dancing with Hank

Who is Sarah Polley? Why should I care? Being really honest here, I don't watch Canadian TV news and so the first I heard of Sarah was on this blog. So my question is, is she some kind of inside joke that no one outside of Toronto has heard of?

For the past few years the box office receipts of movies, cd sales, etc have been going down. Lots of blame put on downloading but I think it is more than that. Whenever a -star- makes a political stmt they turn off a part of their fan base. Those fans boycott them. Who is this Sarah, isn't she a loser at the Academy Awards. Why should I care what she thinks or does. If she is so successful then she can finance her own movies.

Sarah Polley's claim to fame seems to be from years ago when she starred in Anne of Green Gables. Since then she's done some directing, but she isn't on my A-list of top Canadian actors or actresses, that's for sure.

Not even my B-list.

All you need to know about Polley:

Following the row with Disney, Polley dedicated more of her efforts to progressive politics, becoming a prominent member of the New Democratic Party, where Ontario legislator Peter Kormos was said to be her political mentor.

In 1995, she lost two back teeth after being struck by a riot police officer during a protest against the Provincial Progressive Conservative government of Mike Harris in Queen's Park, Toronto.[6][7] She was subsequently involved with the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty.[6] She has recently scaled back on her political activism.[citation needed]

In 2003, she was part of newly-elected Toronto mayor David Miller's transition advisory team

Paul, that reads like a script for a conservative horror show.

Unknown said...

Yes, a horror show starring someone who's entire life has involved sucking at the public teat of taxpayer funded programming, and truly believes that this abuse of the public sets her above us somehow.

joe makes a very obvious point:
Corner Gas is popular...anyone know how much funding or tax relief Brett needed to make that show work?
Sarah Polley (have to admit I remember her from Road to Avonlea)...but joe doesn't know who she is...how much funding or tax relief has she recieved?

Polley, McLachlan, etc should take a hint from Shania Twain in this CMT interview:

CMT: Hillary Clinton has asked her supporters to choose her campaign song, and "Rock This Country!" is one of the nine choices she's posted on her official Web site. Are you comfortable with your songs being used in the political forum?

Shania: You know, I am, because I'm not the politician, and I just completely remove myself from that. I don't have anything against or for any particular person or point of view on politics. I have my own opinions, but my songs don't share them. ...
