The Quality of Mercy - missing in Ottawa

The Bard would not have been impressed.

A man makes a heartfelt, humble apology for something he said at a private party 16 years ago, but the Liberals are using it in today's Question Period as an attempt to smear the Government.

No doubt they're looking to see if this dog will hunt, but I think it's just going to come back to bite them in the rear anyway - just like every other so- called scandal that they've attempted to ignite.

Update: Partial transcript of Commons apology here. (Post)

- Excellent post by Steve Janke who has suggested a variety of options for Tom Lukiwski.

Queer-Liberal: Tommy Douglas on homosexuality in 1968. (Via Mike McGuire)

Macleans - Homophobic slur hurts Tory attempts at image makeover. Remember this one? -

"Homosexuality is statistically abnormal, it's physically abnormal and it's morally immoral." Liberal MP Tom Wappel.

Interesting take on things here from Jonathan Kay at the National Post: Tom Lukiwski shouldn't resign.

Forgiveness hard to find in Ottawa - National Post.

SDA - Lukiwski - Stop Apologizing.

All the Liberals have left is "gotcha" politics. They love stories like this because it takes the spotlight off of Dion's incompetence for five minutes.

I'm still waiting for apologies from various Liberals for denigrating Christians over and over again.

And wait for it! The MSM, Liberals and the Commie Dippers will say that Harper is "controlling his MPs" and the "hidden agenda" is alive and well in the CPC. They sceam that Harper won't let them talk but when they do (16 years ago) all hell breaks out. I am so fed up with the media in this country ... BS, BS, BS

I am angry and will NEVER listen to any other political party and will ALWAYS vote Conservative until my dying day.

I haven't been watching the HoC today... but I thought that QP didn't start until ~2:15pm ET.

Or are they just using it genereally in regards to the Buget Implementation Bill with the immigration changes?

What a sad state of affairs when something from years ago gets dregded up to smear someone with.
I found his apology very profound. Why is that not good enough for the left and their MSM?

I grieve for this country when real issues are ignored and this tabloid stuff is the focus. God help us!

Reid, it always starts at 11 am on Fridays.

I agree. It's beyond the pale. The Bloc had the decency to accept the apology and get on with it. But that's not good enough for the Liberals.

Looks whose calling the kettle "black."
I still remember the Cretien LIEberals calling the Americans "Morons" and "those bastards."
Like the old saying "dont let the truth get in the way of a good smear or an old story."
LIEberal, hypocrites!

If you review the readers comments on CTV.ca which is about 90% unanimously accepting the appologies of Tom including some gays and Liberal supporters + their poll currently at 65% saying he should NOT resign THEN YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT JOANNE THAT YET AGAIN THE FIB DOGS ARE BARKING UP A DEAD TREE...WHERE'S THAT ELECTION FOR GAWD SAKES, I'M SO SICK AND TIRED OF THESE MEDIOCRE OPPOSITION PARTIES!

Apology is not enough for Ralph Goodale. No mercy or compassion from Liberal Ralph. MP Ralph Goodale is perfect and he reminds Western Canadians of the reason not to vote Liberal.
His high and mighty attitude sells in Ottawa to the National Press Gallery but not to Western Canadian Voters.

Thanks for that, Grind a Grit (I love that handle!!).

Dang. I didn't know that. I never watch on Fridays. I'll have to wait for the archive to be posted tomorrow then I guess.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Fay, exactly right. To err is human, to forgive divine.

Which of us has never made a mistake in our lives? Why I can even remember a certain Liberal strategist making a sexist posting on his blog about women belonging in the kitchen during the last Ontario election!!! He was forgiven (by a Conservative MPP.)

BTW, you can vote here at the CTV poll, regarding whether or not you think Tom should step down.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Reid, wow!!

Joanne (True Blue) said...

CTV has a transcript of Tom's apology in the House here.

I still hope you can all see the apology again live if CPAC repeats it. It was right at 11, I think or a few minutes before.
Good to read it, but if you can find a rerun just to see him speaking and then to see the standing ovation and the Speaker of the House. Quite moving and emotional.

Yeah, thanks Ruth. I caught a bit of it on the noon news, and I'm sure it will be on MDL tonight.

Lol. Joanne.... I didn't even intend to past that poll link. It was an artifact left in my clip board from last night.

I meant to copy paste some of your text. So I used the mouse to highlight then right click copy... but when I pasted I ctrl V pasted it. So it didn't take what I had meant to paste from your text. Too funny.

It strikes me that this sort of thing has been going on with great consistency for a very long time.

The Dippers used to try to pull it on the LIbs every chance they got. It's one of the things that cost them any sort of credibility and brought them to where they are now .. the party of irrelevance.

Time was that whenever the DIPs would launch one of their rhetoric filled diatribes or attempt a smear against a LIberal .... the LIbs would laugh it off and the MSM would be there to repeat the Liberal counterpunch.

Now I'm convinced that the MSM were worried that their steady stream of soundbite newsbits was going to dry up without their freinds in power and I think the LIbs were worried that the MSM jokers would go turncoat on them if they sunk low enough.

Right now.... I'm guessing that this is going to be the last hurrah for both. The desperation and shear vindictiveness is EVERYTHING the laftards were screaming about the conservatives being guilty of.

NOW .... we are shown daily and IN FACT just who the rabid slandering ideologues are !

As for the MSM ... just remember two years ago ... Fife, Boag and the other incompetent toadies of the PPG swore that they would get their revenge on the Tories for yanking them off the pedestal.

I say they'd better start looking for new jobs.

Reid, CPAC usually rebroadcasts QP at 9:00 pm and at 12:00 midnight, although it's usually an edited version. Check out CPAC's schedule here:

Here is what I think is a fair comparison to the comments in the video and why his thoughts have most likely changed regarding Gays and Aids since 1991 when the video was made.

1n 1993, Tom Hanks starred in a movie called Philadelphia. At that time many thought aids was a disease from the gay community, and most people, including myself, knew little of it. Watching this movie will allow people to see how people's rationale concerning gays has changed.

There was a reason many gays preferred to stay in the closet, that being it was looked at as taboo in most peoples eyes, and they were afraid of being ridiculed. People's outlook today is far more accepting than even 5 years ago, let alone 16.

Yesterday I was calling for the head of Tom for the good of the party.

But now, I think it is onl;y right to forgive him. The party is going to ge hit over the head with this again and again.

But like someone said on aother blog, liberals are the ones who think about power first.

Tom Lukiwski owned up to his mistake and is going to have to live with it.

Don't want to make excuses for Tom Lukiwski, but dude looked hammered.

PS: If this was the US, Lukiwski would have had his wife and kids with him when he apologized. But he just came right out gave a heart felt apologie. And then again he had to make one in the house the next day. And he was all class.

My last post was in the preview section and I hit the publish button instead of th edit. That is why the spelling and grammer are bad.

PS: My spelling and grammer is always bad but hey what are you ging to do:)

Joanne (True Blue) said...

No worries about spelling etc., Blue Magic.

This issue is being discussed on MDL right now.

Anonymous said...

The reporter that Don Newman was talking to said that Tom's riding wanted him to step down and not represent them. The radio guys on MDL said the people calling the radio didn't want him to step down.
Now if I heard all this correctly, which is the feeling of the people of his riding in Sask.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Well Ruth, I haven't heard one way or the other.

I feel sorry for the PM coming back to all this though, after such a successful NATO meeting.

Interesting timing...

and Joanne...you know the timing is no accident.PMSH is a real hit internationally, and our media barely mention his accomplishments.

If I had discovered a video tape in an office which had previously been occupied by someone else, I would have made every effort to find the owner; I would not have played it because it would be none of my business. Obviously, the Saskatchewan NDPers were not well brought up as children.

I do not for one minute believe that this was "found" in an office. This was a blatant plant.

If I were Tom and Brad, I would start thinking about who was at that party. Who was manning the camer.

So if a man can't change his beliefs or opinions after 16 years, then the remake of the next LPC leader Bob Rae will have an absolutely devastating toll on the Canadian economy & taxpayers. As a Ontario resident & taxpayer from the good old Rae Days, I appreciate the LPC for reminding me.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Oh, good one, Greyburr! Let's file that one away for future reference.

BTW, did anyone see the new Liberal MP Joyce Murray on MDL tonight? Thoughts?

Yeah, I thought he handled things quite well.

"Joyce, you're better than that..."

Heh.

I agree with you Joanne. What MP, Tom Lukiwski said about gays 16 years ago was hurtful, but he has sincerely apologized for it, both inside and outside the HOC. So I belive that the MSM and HOC should accept his apology.

I posted an article in my blog, titled:
Why Can’t the MSM and Opposition Parties Accept MP Tom Lukiwski Apology?

Anonymous said...

That comment regarding past comments by other MP's in the Joan Bryden piece: I have news for you! All of those MP's crushed their competition in their ridings!
