Voting record demonstrates intolerance: MacPhail

Liberal strategist Don Boudria had it right on MDL. A MPs voting record does not signify whether or not he is homophobic.

However, NDP strategist Joy McPhail maintains that MP Tom Lukiwski must still be homophobic since his voting record supposedly reflects it.

So according to Joy MacPhail, a vote against gay marriage is homophobic. Very interesting. And therefore, representing the views of your constituents is not relevant in Parliament.

Furthermore, she states, " ...he's probably amongst his own inside that caucus - they're probably all A's as he describes himself inside that caucus. So let him stay amongst his own, but he's got to go as Parliamentary Secretary..."

No generalizing there. No group slurs. No sir.

Boudria attempted to distance himself from MacPhail's obtuse remarks:

"...I don't think someone's voting record should be utilized to say whether a comment he made was appropriate or not appropriate. The comment stand on it's own...
...I want to distance myself from guilt by association remarks...

Exactly.

Joy smells blood and jumps the shark.

Friday Update: Tasteless tape sparks tacky outrage - The Star Phoenix.

Alberta Ardvark: My sincere regrets. Real Early Edition:

...If the CBC, NDP, and this country can forgive enough to name Tommy Douglas as the Greatest Canadian, and if the Liberals can forgive Stephane Dion for being a proud Quebec separatist, I hold out hope that the public can also find it in their hearts to forgive me as well...

And from Gabby in the comment section of this post:

What this incident proves to me is the following:

1. The opposition will try ANY means to discredit the Conservatives. Let's face it, the more dirt they dig up, the less the focus will be on their own inadequacies.

2. The "progressives" believe in forgiveness and redemption only when it fits their purposes.
Lukiwski has apologized profusely for his idiotic statement, yet the sanctimonious "progressives" say it's not enough. That was the gist of the discussions on Newman's Politics, Pierre Donais' Revue Politique, and Peter Van Dusen's Prime Time Politics.
They are ready to forgive baby shakers and murderers, but the comment of someone who may have had one too many beers ... oh no! His career should be ruined.

3. The "progressives," apparently the only people who have a caring bone in their bodies, believe in guilt by association.
According to their logic, Lukiwski made a homophobic comment, he's a Conservative, therefore, all Conservatives are homophobic.

4. The "progressives" believe in the right to privacy, yet they have no qualms about digging into another party's discarded files.

5. Canadians are warned almost daily to protect themselves against identity theft. Haven't Conservative staffers been listening to those warnings? Haven't they heard of shredders?

And (#6) don't assume that the private tape made of your bone-headed remarks while partying and drinking way too much will never surface and humiliate you and your family when you've finally matured and your attitudes have changed 16 years later.

She was definately pouring it on a tad thick. Ukrainian-Canadians still hurting from Nestor Pistor ? Who does she think bought his records ? I suppose shes going to go after that native comedian next (i forget his name ) who pokes fun at whites for paying to sit in his audience and get ribbed .

Oh I definitely agree that one's voting record does not reflect their own personal views towards social issues. One could vote against gay marriage because they believe that it's a union between man and woman, and have nothing against gay people.

Still, Mr. Likiwski should have known better at the age of 40 how comments like that could be viewed. What were those guys thinking when they made that stupid tape?

It also occurred to me that they were campaign workers for the Devine Government in the 1991 election, possibly the most corrupt government in the history of Canada.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Yeah, and the ironic thing is that according to CTV, Bill Siksay accepted the apology and considers the matter closed. So Joy MacPhail is clearly off-message here.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

My previous comment was addressed to Cantuc, but thanks for weighing in here Alan.

That tape was obviously never meant for public consumption. More perils of alcohol.

hunter said...

Another witchhunt by the opposition. Apology made, but because it is a Conservative MP, apology will not be accepted.

Joy was over the top, but hey, she's a NDP, enough said. They are fighting for their political lives as are the Liberals, so any "scandal" will do.

Now, shouldn't the Sask NDP be sued for stealing and releasing a tape that was not their property?

Anonymous said...

There are lots of politicians tossing and turning in their beds tonight wondering where the tapes are from that party a few years ago.
The hypocrites are the ones who will claim they have never, ever insulted anyone who is different from them.Yeah,right..

You are correct Joanne... this is a distraction from the success at Nato. Shame on the MSM for playing the game.

Joy Impale is a nasty lefty and we had a full dose of her during the reign of the NDP in BC for two economy-destroying terms in the 90s.

Thank heavens she is now nothing but a nasty quasi pundit out in the wilderness of her opulent far left elitist life-style ... having married well late in life.

I wonder when the diamond thief will weigh in on this issue.

I still fail to understand why being homophobic is a crime against humanity? What if I hate dwarfs or people with hairy backs? Does that not make me a criminal too? (real conservative)

Reid said...

Not to defend Joy, but "we" Conservatives have done the very same thing. She's just making a partisan point.

Based on voting Conservatives have called other parties:

soft on crime

supporters of kiddie porn

against our troops

supporters of terrorists

I'm just saying... I'm not going to tear Joy a new one for her comments. She was doing her job as a partisan pundit.

Credit to Bill Siksay for saying he accepted the appology and believed Tom was sincere.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Good point, Reid.

Yeah, Bill Siksay was very classy here. I admire that.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Of course, we could also talk about the voting records of some parties that don't vote at all...

Reid said...

Hell... EVEN Cherniak thinks what Tom said should be forgivable considering how long ago he said it. Considering Jason's history of making a mountain out of a molecule I was taken aback.

Joy MacPhail is one of those supercilious NDP losers who have dragged a party, that once stood on principle, down to the level of the American style politics they so decry. Their holier-than-thou attitude (remember the porn on the lap top)has managed to drop them into the realm of the Green Party and into a position where they could go the way of the Dodo. These muck-rakers are so bereft of any substantive issue that they spend all their time resorting to smear and fear. According to their philosophy if you haven't been a true adherent to the thoughts of Marx or Mao since you crawled from the crib you are not worthy to trod the same hallowed ground as these paragons of virtue. (check out the rap sheets of the NDP premiers in BC) The only scandal in the governance of Canada is the inability of these left wing nutters to get their act together and bring down the government they so despise.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Thanks, Reid. I just added that link to the main post.

Past mistakes were made and genuine apology given. But that is not good enough for Robert Fife. I find the rightous moral judgements of the National Press Gallery harder and harder to stomach. I wonder how Robert Fife expects Mr. Likuwski to prove he is really sorry and has changed his ways? More of the same; Liberals the good and Conservatives the bad.

Fay, good point. It reminds me of Don Martin's attitude about Helene Guergis, which I blogged about a few posts back.

The air up on the Hill must be getting pretty rarefied. These guys think they should have access to the hearts and minds of MPs.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Good stuff, Gabby. I featured your list in an update to the main post. Well done.

I wonder what others thought when the statement was uttered "amongst his own". Hope John Baird wasn't offended by that remark.
There are many in the Liberal party that voted against SSM too.
I hope Tom doesn't think he has to resign over something that happened at a private party 16 years ago.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Right. I guess Joy MacPhail is going to have to label them as homophobes too.

MacPhail and Laytons remarks give us a look at why the NDP are a fringe party and will always be a fringe party. And I disagree with the comments about Fife...I think Mr Likiwski should explain why his attitudes have changed towards homosexuals...I know mine have changed and I know why...so I urge Mr Likiwski to explain why. Look, Conservative's try to paint Liberals, and Liberals try to paint Conservative's..Mr Likiwski could help alot and I hope he does.

From what I've read on other blogs, it's time that Robert Fife and CTV offered an apology too for remarks he has made about the Conservatives being "knuckle-draggers".

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Joanne.

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/canada/story.html?id=420217 h/t National Newswatch:

From Don Martin's column:
"After six years of lollygagging around Kabul -- shopping for carpets along Chicken Street, munching fresh lamb kabobs and generally wearing the ***cheese-eating surrender monkey*** uniform like a legion of honour -- French troops will reluctantly step into the line of Taliban fire this year."
Not exactly a prime example of diplomatic nuanced language.

As Reid @ Thu Apr 03, 10:06:00 PM EDT stated, conservatives (including politicians, bloggers, and commenters) have also engaged in the name-calling and negative characterizations.

Can WE ALL learn to phrase our verbal barbs without including puerile name-calling?

Funny how the opposition continues to bring up the past to try to smear the Tories

Mulroney - 15 years
Cadman - 6 years
Brenda Martin - 2 years
Harper's reform party words - 20 years
Wall and Likiwski - 16 years

Perhaps it is because they are looking back to the good old days when they were in power instead of looking to the future and cannot fact the fact they will not be.

I predict the old "hidden agenda" will be front and centre within a couple of weeks.

I have another question though - howcome CTV - within hours - had a poll up asking Canadians if he should resign

Where were the polls asking if Dhalla should resign or her treatment of Indian children or Murphy should resign for calling for Mulroney's head to hang high?.

Oh right....they're Liberals

paulsstuff said...

I myself hope the Liberal's continue to bring up stuff from years past. Then during the election campaign their pleas that it is in the past will be quickly countered with all these issues they seem to want to drag out.

e.g. Adscam, and the record of one former Ontario Premier.

p.s. Just sent you an e-mail Joanne. I'm sure it will brighten your day.

Time to call these jokers out - I am a supporter of these so called "knuckledraggers" and by insulting us with their endless smears they are insulting every Canadian who supports them.

I resent it. These so called "scandals" that pop up every week are starting to get very, very tiring and the fact that the press in this country immediately drops the actual news stories (NATO for one) to pick up on these attempts by the Liberals to smear the Tories shows that they have become as irrelevant as the old Gossip rags you find at the checkout counters.

Please write your complaints to CTV and the CRTC

this latest revelation is certainly eye opening to me.
when did it become o.k. to take possession of property left behind inadvertently by another person or party?
this is the same as opening mail left in your mail box by mistake ( i receive a lot of neigbours mail) should i glean from this exercise by the NDP that in future i should open said mail and if it happens to contain something i can use for my benifit well by all means i should just go ahead and enjoy myself.
as distressing as the comments are they do not reflect who the man is today period.
if we as Canadians cannot forgive we are lost.
we give credence to those words of hatred and intolerance.
this should be a wake up call to media and politicians STOP the senseless name calling ALL NAME CALLING AND FALSE ACCUSATIONS ARE HURTFULL
does anyone remember the description Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney gave of the day when he was wrongly accused?
My heart broke when i read that the Prime Minister's children had to ask their mother "Is Daddy dead?"
they had just watched a media report that stated Stephen Harper is dead in the water.
that this country i love has been lowered to this low state of affairs breaks my heart.

fun and banter and laughfter are o.k. we need humor but let the media give pause to what it is trying to orchestrate.
tolerance of human foibles not persecution not judgement.
Do we not contribute to furthering hatred and intolerance if we are unable to forgive?

fh - Very well said. I was thinking the same thing myself. If you sold a house and accidentally left some tapes or personal papers behind, would it be ethical to go through them and display them to the public?

BTW, Sandy has a good discussion going on too at COTM.

The Liberals are going crazy trying to smear the CPC with innuendos about immigration policies now.

Absolutely disgusting.

Anonymous said...

FH, your comment should be mailed to all the Liberal MPs who right at this moment are excoriating Lukiwski, who has repeated a heartfelt apology in the House, by saying things like: if the PM doesn't do anything about it (i.e. fire Lukiwski) "he owns it" (Ralph Goodale).

And if we are to go back in history, perhaps the Liberals should review their own history when it came to admitting immigrants:
They should perhaps google Frederick Charles Blair.

From Wiki:
«As part of the government of [Liberal] William Lyon Mackenzie King, Blair is considered largely responsible for holding back Jewish Immigration during the 1930s and war years. Between 1933-1939, only 4,000 to 5,000 German Jews were allowed into Canada, in comparison to over 140,000 into the United States, and about 20,000 into Mexico.

In September of 1938, in a letter to the Prime Minister, when Jews are extremely desperate to leave Nazi Germany and escape the violent escalation there he writes, "Pressure by Jewish people to get into Canada has never been greater than it is now, and I am glad to be able to add that after 35 years of experience here, that it has never been so carefully controlled".»

All I can say to that is if the Liberals are so unhappy, maybe they should vote against it. Anyone think they will? No one? Thought so.
