NDP raises a good question

Why should we believe McGuinty this time?

Lots more promises to come. Are they just a lot of hot air?

While we're at it, Santa McGuinty, I would like to see dental care covered by our health care system - for everyone who can't afford it . Dental care is fundamental. If you have a cavity or infection, it is a gateway into the body for germs and bacteria.

Furthermore, there should be screenings for mouth cancer.

How many more sleeps til the election?

Update: 71 new promises - Globe. But the Health Tax is here to stay, folks. Read it and weep.

Nobody is doubting the Liberals are lying as surely as they did last election. The problem lies in the fact that John Tory has made it exceedingly difficult to oust McGuinty with his recent political foundering.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Absolutely. John Tory is Dalton's best campaign asset right now.

Joanne,

I understand the importance of dental care, but how do you propose to have the public purse pay for it, but only for those who can't afford it?

That's kind of a reverse 2-tier system. Instead of having a base level of public care and allowing the rich to purchase additional care, you're talking about a default position where people pay for care, and the public system only pays for those who can't afford it?

How do you determine who gets covered and who doesn't? Sounds like it opens up an opportunity for abuse like we have with other subsidized services. The many problems with subsidized housing in an example that comes to mind.

It also sounds like it will cost me more money. Personally, I can afford to pay for my dental care, so now more of my tax dollars will be spent on something I won't see any benefit from?

Perhaps I don't fully understand the details of your proposal?

Just another day in the Lemming Nation.

For a real change of pace, have a gander at Kinsella's blog site.

Oddly enough he's posted an excerpt from The Simpson's on the whole theory of evolution/creationism stuff, BUT, in viewing what he's presenting the clip actually supports what John Tory said yesterday and not at all the hype the Liberals are spinning.

Imagine. An education minister that doesn't know that teachers DO despite what the curriculum says present both creationism and evolution as fodder for discussion and projects for students in Grade 12 biology. There is no check or balance on the part of the Ministry for determining or stopping personal bias on this issue...none whatsoever!!

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Dave - I don't have all the details of my platform fully worked out yet. My election team will be making a presentation in due course. ;)

Seriously, I hear your concern. I wonder if it could somehow be linked to income tax or something.

There are many seniors out there without dental plans, and poor dental hygiene can seriously impact one's health.

As one gets older, the chances of poor dental health can also impact heart disease, etc.

Anonymous - Thanks for the tip about Kinsella. Video can be found here at today's date.

Seriously? Are we talking about the Catholic schools or public too?

Joanne,

Dental for seniors may be something I could work with. It's similar to the prescription drug coverage by the province for those over 65 years of age.

Determining who can and cannot afford dental care is not always a function of income, but more often a function of who has a medical plan through their workplace. Even those who make a good healthy income can't always afford those surprise $1,000 dental bills.

When you retire, you typically lose your employer's drug plan, and that's when you need the provincial assistance.

Connecting it to age also makes it something that everyone (including me) can eventually take advantage of.

Yeah. It should be dependent on one's financial situation though. A millionaire shouldn't be able to use it.

We need to get John Tory on this.

Anonymous said...

Joanne,

We may be drifting off topic here, but why should a millionaire not be able to use it? He'd be paying for it in his taxes? A millionaire is entitled to a provincially funded physician and hospital care under our system, so if our system were to add some level of dental care, why should that be any different?

Anonymous said...

The idea behind "the millionaire uses it too", is that the millionaire pays more dollars in taxes, which would offset the lack of "need".

The lack of a bureaucracy to do the means tests, and the lack of a bureaucracy to process appeals of the means test decisions, and the lawyers etc should make it cheaper to simply have it available to anyone with ohip.

Dave & L.S. - Good points from both of you.

Is anyone from the Conservative war room listening? Or the NDP for that matter?

Anonymous said...

Someone in the war room listening? Not bloody likely.

The Liberal war room only listens to polls, not sound policy. The John Tory war room (I won't call it a Conservative war room) doesn't listen to it's supporter base at all. And the NDP war room... well, I think they're just smoking pot all day long in there?

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Oh dear. Tory is doomed:

...consultant Paul Rhodes will run the "war room." Rhodes ran Eves's "war room" in 2003 when the Tories infamously dubbed McGuinty an "evil reptilian kitten-eater from another planet."

Answer to Joanne from Anon. 12:33pm

I'm talking public high school.

Essentially teachers can do what they wish in the teaching of just about anything in this province. There are few checks and balances, and the curriculum, as I've often been told by teachers is only a guide.

There is nothing stopping a teacher with a bias either way, or a teacher who wants to give students a chance to see both sides the opportunity to do so.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Brian, sorry. I started panicking.

Anon, I see what you're saying. Yes, that's true. They can easily slip in their own POV or bias.

Joanne, hope you don't mind me posting this here.Daily now Kinsella and Cherniak are doing a John Tory "reality Check",similar to what the CBC did to the Conservatives in the last election.

Now here is what I just posted on Cherniak's blog.Let's see if he has the integrity to allow the post.

From Jason on a previous post claiming Tory can't lower taxes AND increase spending:

3) According to the National Post, John Tory is "vowing to cut taxes and increase spending by more than $14-billion over five years". I know it might make him testy, but this idea of cutting taxes and increasing spending sounds suspiciously similar to two certain former Premiers (for the slow out there, Ernie Eves and Mike Harris).

From Kinsella today:

JM: It’s focused. 71 commitments. That's a lot less than 2003. Premier said he learned something from 2003. Which is not to make too many promises. It’s fully costed. $15.3b in additional revenues that are going to pay for programs. Big problem is they are going to keep health tax. When it first came in, people were furious about broken promise. McGuinty and Finance Minister said it would be reviewed in 2009. Closer reading of platform shows it’s being kept past 2009. So, I asked "what's up"? Is this another broken promise? He confirmed, they are keeping it. He was upfront about it: This is what I stand for, if you don't like it don't vote for me. They are keeping the health tax.

So using Kinsella's info,it would appear Tory can increase spending $14 billion and also cut taxes by $1.3 billion. And that's using McGuinty's numbers.

No problem. I always welcome tips & interesting tidbits.

Must go check out Cherniak's blog. Thanks.

Lead Lemming - Dalton McGuinty
Lemming no. 2 - Warren Kinsella
Lemming no. 3 - Cherniak

Paulstuff - thanks for the lesson in basic math. You'd think the head lemmings would clue in.

My sympathies to Mr. Kinsella while his blog offerings are really awful these days.

Who IS Jason Cherniak anyway? I've tuned into his blog every once in a while but there really isn't anything of intelligence there. Just insinuations lots of negative attacks on just about anything he feels like it. If the future of the Ont. liberals is representative of Cherniak Ontario's in deep doodoo.

Gah! Don't say that. I just referred to him in the next post.

Paul, I see he responded, although not exactly to your comment.

Despite the fact I'm no genius, I suggested Tory back away from the religious education funding promise weeks ago.

Dumbest f*cking promise I can recall in a campaign by a PC. Can jet-skiing be next?

When the writ is dropped, he should quickly remove this from his platform, take a few days of heat, and go back to the lies McGuinty told.

Möbius said...

Cherniak is now a total shill of the Liberal Party. His opinions are now not his own, and best ignored. Much like Kinsella.

Highest bidder rules!

They can, and usually do. I remember my Grade 9 Social Studies teacher making some not-so-subtle anti-Christian remarks in class.
