Is this a good idea?

Via National Newswatch - Canada to recognize Kosovo independence: report.

There certainly is a mixed reaction in the comments section of the CTV website!

If this is the case then somebody in the Canadian Government needs to lose their job.
Although the UN position on Kosov is Clearly in support of the independence I see NO reason why we should Toe That Line!

I'll be looking forward to reading the official announcement, and all the whys and wherefores. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Harper has now shown to be George W. Bush's monkey.
Disgusting.
Lewis MacKenzie warned that Kosovo was Serbia not a greater Albania.
Harper just lost my support.

Seriously, I don't get the fuss.

There is no way what happened in Serbia parallels Quebec.

This can be rationalized as the final outcome of an aggression initiated by the Serbs, and viewed as an example of how an aggressor was punished in a manner that might serve as a deterrent to future aggressors.

That's why the Russians and Chinese are so upset by this. And anything that upsets China and Russia can't be bad if you ask me.

Ultimately this is a European issue, and I think we should let them deal with it. I frankly don't care one way or the other if Kosovo is recognized by us. I presume Stephen Harper is doing the right thing having thought about the matter, and trust him more than all the armchair pundits and special interest groups posting their indignant rants.

I guess that's what puzzles me - why did Canada have to take a stand at all on this?

Well you have to either recognize a state or not. You can't ignore it. They're going to want to start having diplomatic relations with other countries. So what happens when Kosovo sends an ambassador to Ottawa?

I agree that this is not the same as Quebec. If a majority of Quebecois choose to leave Canada we will let them go. By recognizing Kosovo the Quebec government (if the PQ get back in) doesn't have carte blanche to unilaterally declare independance without consulting the people of Quebec.

Obviously the Serbs are very upset about this, but we shouldn't let them hijack Canadian politics. Their problems are NOT our problems.

Maybe this will encourage Quebec to get the heck outta Canada already. There's so many good reasons to give 'em the ol' heave ho and very few good reasons to bribe them to stay. So don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, Quebec! We're way better off without you. You can pick up your share of the national debt as you go...

This is a collosal mistake on Canada's part. Apparently Canada's foreign policy now includes supporting Albanian warlords. This will destabilize the Balkans.

Though it would have been hard, Stephen Harper and Maxime Bernier should have stood up to the Foreign Affairs mandarins as well as London and Washington, and taken a different stance. Instead, he gave in, probably hoping to curry favour with NATO allies who're being called upon to help out in Kandahar.

That's an angle I hadn't thought of.

I remember that when Dion came out with this position you said that it was proof that he shouldn't be PM.

Same goes here?

I am extremely disapointed as a CPC member. I think I have had all the vote pandering I can stomach. Where is the "Canada is going to be a leader in the world" gone.

I'm flattered that you follow this blog so closely. ;)

The post in question is here, and my concern was his making a diplomatic decision in such a knee-jerk fashion.

Obviously the Harper government has given this a lot of thought, but I am still disappointed with the end result.

It's called Balkanism look it up!
Why anyone would encourage it is beyond reason.

The Kosovars were not innocent in the animosity that erupted back in 1992 - 1995. They had in fact supported small conclaves of radical militant Islamists that were responsible for the murder of Serbs.
It was a terrorist campaign that resulted in achieving exactly what the militants wanted. They got the west to act as intervenors and force the Serbs into partitioning their country. Now we have the final stage set where after a few years of enforced 'peace' the Kosovars again take the belligerent role knowing full well that the trained response of the "official" west is locked into the role of pacifier of the Serbs.

The Serbs are rightly aggravated about this because they were forced to comply with the will of the Europeans into coexistence with the Kosovars only to have their dominion stolen yet again.

This the exact equivalent of negotiating with terrorists!
Anybody who does so deserves a boot in the ass....

When someone else owns the world I guess we just have to tow the line .If this is a good thing then Harper shouldn't have a problem signing on to other Indigenous nations within the Canadian geographical borders .katou

I remember a politician being called Mr. Dithers for this very same trait. ;-)
