Liberal cover-up?

Joel-Denis Bellevance relates a story in La Presse that suggests that the former Liberal government was keenly aware of warnings of torture in Afghanistan (H/T National Newswatch).

This is a translated version of the article, so it reads the way Stephane Dion speaks English, and is therefore somewhat difficult to follow, but well worth the effort.

Bellevance makes the point that the present government is surely to blame for a lot of confusion this week, but the Liberals may not have been lily-white in the affair themselves.

Et en français: (Bourque) - Torture en Afghanistan: les libéraux savaient.

SDA: Michael Ignatieff - Call Your Office.

And here's your weekend quiz courtesy of ChuckerCanuk: Am I a Liberal..?

I don't think it's a cover-up, but just another case of the opposition, aided and abetted by the MSM, magnifying a Conservative faux-pas, whereas they ignored similar events under the Liberal regime.

Accusations levelled at our military, at our Conservative Ministers, as being accomplices in the torture and abuse of Afghan prisoners, are not only outrageouly unfounded accusations, but also an illustration of the irrational hatred harboured, fomented and promoted by some elements in our "kinder, gentler society."

A pox on all their houses.

Furthermore, the accusations levelled by the opposition are completely politically motivated, not motivated by any principles.

The two professors spearheading the attacks on the Conservatives have definite ties to the opposition.
Prof. Attaran apparently owes a debt of gratitude to Deputy Leader of the Opposition Ignatieff:
http://stevejanke.com/archives/224017.php
"Amir Attaran, now Canada research chair in law, population health, and global development policy at the University of Ottawa, was a research fellow at the Kennedy School during Mr. Ignatieff's time at the Carr.

He ran afoul of an influential faculty member and the school's administration over a line of academic inquiry he insisted on pursuing, and found himself about to be booted out.

He brought his troubles to Mr. Ignatieff, who gave him office space and mentoring support until he could find another academic home." Michael stuck up for me against some extremely nasty attacks," Prof. Attaran says."

And as for Prof. Byers:
http://stevejanke.com/archives/224246.php
"Guess what? Michael Byers has donated $640 to the NDP beginning late 2005:
Michael Byers New Democratic Party, Aug. 30, 2006 $300.00
Michael Byers New Democratic Party, Sep. 2006 Aug. 30, 2006 $200.00
Michael Byers New Democratic Party, Oct. 12, 2005 $140.00
Michael Byers New Democratic Party, Dec. 31, 2005 $100.00"

If these two individuals, the opposition and certain members of the MSM can question and impugn the credibility, honesty and integrity of our duly elected Ministers and of our military, then I feel perfectly justified in questioning the motives and credibility of the accusers.

Ignatieff on Duffy,

Talking about "well founded allegations" at which point Duffy asks him, "You actually believe this, why should we take the word of terrorists, who are taught to lie about being tortured, as well founded allegations"?

Michaels answer?

"Look, we believe in the presumption of innocence"

And then he talks about the Geneva Convention at which point Duffy has to fill him in on the facts of the Geneva Convention.

Duffy asks him why the government in waiting does not have a soulution, Ignatieff tells him not to shift responsibilities.

And that, my friends, would be an Iggy smackdown, courtesy of Mike Duffy.

Full front page coverage in the Globe and Mail?

I'm thinking my dog will graduate from university first.

Biff, that's right. She never did graduate from York, did she?

Sorry, that was really bad, but I couldn't resist.

Joanne...I swear I didnt see your posts before I posted mine...but don't worry a check of bloggers shows that said article went by bush telegraph fast...and we all got onboard...
It is very sad that oppostion games have such serious worldly consequences. MSM not helping one little bit either.
lots of love and light to you and your readers....

Yes, that's the very sad aspect of this whole thing. The Taliban knows it has leverage with the opposition parties firmly entrenched against the government. We need solidarity; not division. It puts our soldiers' lives in jeopardy.

Has anyone else noticed that every time the Liberals try to "get" the Conservatives, their ploy comes back to bite "them" in the ass??? Sorry Joanne, but there's no other word to use.

Talk about your instant karma....this is fun to watch.

Seriously though....this is the bunch that had Canada's fate in their hands for many a year. Scary now that the real dealings are being uncovered as to what a sleazy ignorant arrogant bunch they are.

anyhow...we will need all that info as this is not going to go away soon..imo.
