Dalton's Epiphany

It would seem that Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has experienced some kind of wake-up call to the vast amount of taxpayers' money that he is throwing at the Caledonia standoff, hoping it will go away.

I can just see him sitting there mulling this one over in his ivory tower...

Yikes! There isn't enough money left in the treasury to buy up all the land six kilometers on either side of the Grand!

Raising taxes isn't an option just before an election. And the natives on both sides are getting restless.

Mmmm... What to do, what to do???

Ah hah! Let's blame Stephen Harper! Yes, we were of one mind with the him before on this issue, but all's fair in love, war and re-elections!

Yes, Let's bring in the Feds! I'm going to act all tough and even start advocating for the poor Caledonia citizens!

I'm going to say stuff like, "We've been caught up on this thing for a long time and more importantly, the people of Caledonia have been caught up in this thing for a long time. Now it's costing Ontario taxpayers all kinds of money".

The Ontario taxpayers will love me for sticking it to them, er, sticking up for them!! I'm going to show them what a decisive leader I am!!!

Right, George?

Dalton was very eager to take resposibility for the situation when he thought that it would be ignored. And can't you imagine his outrage if the federal government stepped into an area of provincial responsibility? Another question: why should the rest of Canada pay for the OPP who have blatently refused to do their jobs,

Swift, there's a good question. Why indeed? I hope all the other premiers start screaming about this one.

Here's a little tidbit from Global:

"What I would like to see is the federal government pursue this with more vigour, more enthusiasm and more determination," McGuinty said. "In some ways they seem to be 100,000 miles away from all of this ... It would be great if at some point in time the federal government government said: `We are going to get serious about this and we're going to manage this effectively so that we can wind up negotiations sooner rather than later."

Can you believe this guy?

Where was the Globe when Jean Cretien was letting Mike Harris handle Ipperwash?

Where was Jean Cretien when when the Ipperwash inquiry was spending days on the dramatic question of whether Mike Harris said "Fuck" in some meeting five years ago? Didn't he have a golf ball from Phil Fontaine to wave around?

Dalton blamed Mike Harris 100% for Ipperwash, and he was going to show Ontario how he was different from Mike Harris. Now he's lost control of the situation, he wants the feds to bail him out, again.

Maybe that's what Prentice is waiting for - Maybe he's hoping that Dalton admits he can't handle it and has to go to Ottawa for help. Harper doesn't like the central gov't getting involved in provincial affairs unless requested to do so.
