Smoking with kids in car now illegal in Wolfville

Wolfville, Nova Scotia has just become the first municipality in Canada to ban smoking if children under 18 are present in the vehicle.

CTV notes:

Earlier this year, the Ontario Medical Association said Ontario should ban smoking in vehicles carrying children, and said most residents in the province would support the move.

So this ban could likely gain momentum across the country.

What are the implications? This would seem to be an infringement on individual rights in favour of the greater good.

What about a pregnant woman? Should she be allowed to smoke in a car?

So much for being in "care and control of your motor vehicle".

Government should let us use our judgment in this regard and stop trying to regulate every aspect of our lives. The majority would not put our kids at risk and that includes smoking with children present in a confined space. I expect the next step is baning smoking in private homes.

This because of a few boneheads who can't go without a nicotine fix for an hour or two. I sure hope the fines are high enough to cover the cost of administering this bylaw. I wouldn't want to pay for it through my taxes.

sadly, I was one of those kids whose parents refused to stop smoking in the car, and the house while I lived with them.

while I don't think it is possible to legislate common sense and I think the ability to enforce the law would be quite hard, I am so totally against a parent doing this to a child. The child has no say, and basically have no rights as to trying to avoid second hand smoke.

I'm fine with this law.

The principle behind the law is noble, however laws don't change peoples hearts. If these parents can't take 'care' of the kids while they are in the car, they probably aren't 'caring' at home. I'm not talking emotion, I'm talking action, because I know parents love the kids.
I am uncomfortable with Nanny state invasion.
Laws re: smoking are extrememly difficult to enforce.
How about those 'no smoking' zones outside public buidings. I still have to step off the sidewalk and cover my face for protection when I approach the entrance to my place of employment...the hospital!...even tho it is clearly marked No Smoking.

the same filthy pigs who smoke with their children present and the same people who use our public spaces as their personal ashtrays.

the individual rights of the majority of us who do not smoke is the real issue here.

Pigs must really be flying, since this is the first comment from jeff that I've seen which I agree with, although I wish he hadn't been quite so "colourful" in his first sentence.

Fascist local governments have far too much power.

What do you feed your kids? Let's have the inspectors over at your house to check your fridge.

Is that your precious snowflake outside without a hat in winter? Where's the government!? You should be fined and humiliated!

What do you mean you'll have a beer in front of the kiddies after work on friday! that's outrageous! the kids should be encouraged to report this behaviour to their teachers so law enforcement can be notified!

Wait for it...

What other behaviour do you think the state has the right to stop you from doing?

People stupid enough to smoke with their kids in their cars will smoke in their homes when their kids are present. Shall we kick the doors in, and arrest them?

I prefer to think of it as natural selection.
