QP - The best entertainment on TV

I was planning to add this Hansard transcript to my post from yesterday, but it is getting a bit long.

Here's the Redman- Nicholson exchange (around 14:30):

Hon. Karen Redman (Kitchener Centre, Lib.):
Mr. Speaker, we know that in 2006 the justice department started to take another look at whether the $2.1 million payment to Brian Mulroney should be set aside but mysteriously the whole process just stopped.

Now the justice minister refuses to answer questions and threatens those who ask questions.

Why all the secrecy from the justice minister? Who stopped the justice department from discharging its duty to Canadians?

Hon. Rob Nicholson (Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, CPC):
Mr. Speaker, I want to be absolutely clear. I did not shut down anything in the justice department.

I think this would be a good opportunity for the member for Brampton—Springdale to get up on her feet and apologize and withdraw the remarks that she made about me.

Hon. Karen Redman (Kitchener Centre, Lib.)
Mr. Speaker, justice department officials wanted to review the Mulroney settlement in light of new evidence that his story had changed, but that was before the cabinet shuffle.

After the cabinet shuffle, when the former Mulroney caucus member became justice minister, there was no more talk of a review.

Will the government confirm that based on this new information it now has relaunched this review and, if not, why not?

Hon. Rob Nicholson (Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, CPC):
Mr. Speaker, the allegations by the hon. member are completely false. They are a fabrication.

I invite her to make those comments outside the House. It is one thing to slander an individual in the House of Commons. I say that she and each of them should have the guts to say it outside this place.

Question: What did Ruby say?

Friday Update: The new rat pack by L. Ian Macdonald. This article contains some interesting references to 'parliamentary immunity'.

And for a completely different take: http://www.macleans.ca/article.jsp?content=20071121_103841_9652

Gayle, that 'completely different take' was obviously written by a Liberal-biased reporter/columnist.

Karen Redman, the soft-spoken Liberal whip,

Soft-spoken???? Does anyone in the real world think Karen Redman is soft-spoken?

And you are not conservative biased?

I don't write for commercial websites.

;)

I do not see how that makes your opinion/take on the matter less biased.

By the way, I am not a fan of any journalist using terms like "whine" to describe the tone of a public official - but as I sometimes read the Sun chain I am getting used to it.

Hey Gayle. Thanks for the link anyway. It was interesting.

Its one thing for a person to have a blog and post their opinions, stated as such. Its something entirely different for a journalist to write an article and pass it off as a non-partisan viewpoint or as a 'news' article when it is in fact an opinion one.

That is the difference.

I think its funny now, why isn't the media crying that Dion is a bully? Just reading that article, Dion called Harper 'pathetic', and accused him of 'lying'.

Exactly.

L. Ian Macdonald commented on Mike Duffy tonight that this is the most 'toxic' political environment he's seen on the Hill in quite a while.

I think the opposition parties should pull the plug.

"Karen Redman, the soft-spoken Liberal whip" - she's just a poor little girl being picked on by a big bad man. Oh those poor little Liberals, so pathetic and weak...

yet liberal supporters like them that way? weird.

I want real adults running the country thank you.

I was just about to cancel my Macleans subscription, but changed my mind after reading this article - It's good to hate T.O.

Your welcome Joanne. I think they want to hide it till the Xmas recess when there will be nobody around to face the questions.

To me its kind of an early present:)

I will be watching QP with even more interest; studying faces and watching for signs.

It was a journalist's blog. In other words, it was an opinion piece. Journalists write opinions all the times. Usually they are in editorials. Sometimes they are in blogs.

The entire point is that you cannot complain about what you call liberal bias (and I have noticed that is what conservative supporters call all articles that do not put their party in a good light), when your own bias completely colours your own "take" on a particular event.

Gayle, my bias is fully disclosed. I blog for the Blogging Tories. My handle is "True Blue".

I don't see anything in that Macleans column to suggest that the writer may have a Liberal bias, and to therefore consider the information accordingly.

Gayle said...

Well maybe the writer was not biased. Maybe that is the way these events are viewed objectively, ie without your personal bias.

Besides, it is not like the National Post or the Sun chain advertise their biases, but many people who are center/left would suggest both are very biased for the conservatives.

And then there's the Star, of course.
