I have just one little question - Updated

Breaking news update - Schreiber extradition challenge denied. H/T National Newswatch.

Star - Schreiber loses appeal. Yeah, I never found him very charismatic either.

Newstalk 570 reports that Schreiber has won a two-week reprieve. The Star has the story.

* * * *

Perhaps I'm being a bit naïve here, but why didn't Karlheinz Schreiber simply use registered mail?

jeff - This is how we know he didn't.

(BTW, Joanne, pigs must be flying since I'm quoting The Star.)

Thanks for that link, Brian. There's so much out there, I'm having trouble keeping up with all the reading.

Feel free to post any other relevant links.

I guess the one thing that concerns me about all this is that it takes the focus away from other important issues that need to be dealt with.

On the other hand, with the Liberals and NDP saying that there shouldn't be an election until all this is sorted out, I am wondering who's planning to stop government legislation that is considered a confidence vote? Does Harper effectively have a carte blanche now?

Over at SDA, Kate has a link via Dan Baril's blog to a copy of the affidavit. According to the statement of claim, Schreiber was claiming that Mulroney owed him for not performing as contracted when out of public office. If anything, Schreiber's own affidavit somewhat vindicates Mulroney from the perception that he pocketed any money from the Airbus deal. Here on PEI, this would wind up in civic court, not in a criminal trial. I think that anybody reading the affidavit thoroughly would be as suprised as I was. This becoming a public inquiry will probably end up favoring both Mulroney and Schreiber; in Mulroney's case because so many people can relate to what it's like having debt collectors after you.

From the Star
"In an interview with two Toronto Star reporters in 2000, a few months after he'd been arrested by the RCMP and released on bail, Schreiber was adamant Mulroney hadn't done anything wrong.

"Mulroney is as innocent as the Pope," he said. "The records can prove it."

Schreiber says Mulroney is as innocent as the pope on the AirBus thing, and is now suing him because he said Mulroney DIDN'T do anything for the $300K.

I fail to see where the issue is warranting an inquiry.

According to the CBC, Schreiber did use registered mail...and he says he has the receipts.

Simon, would you happen to have a link?

Mulroney's publisher wants it. Sales have been lower than Chretien's memoirs, and that with Chretien not out promoting it.

This will keep his book flying off the shelves for a while.

It is entertaining at the very least. The media is having a field day. The Liberals are relieved to be off the hook for an election.
Mulroney is suing a Liberal MP.

Watching politics is a giggle again.

The best part...when it is all over and done. Liberals look like schmucks. Mr. Harper is shown to be above it all...and wins a majority.

Quite right. I can't wait to see his next chess move.

I normaly don't read Jim Travesty anymore, but I fou nd this to be interesting.

http://www.thestar.com/article/276700

Travesty is saying that an inquiry is not needed because the cost/benefit is too low. Perhaps he is affraid of what the inquiry might shed some light on with regards to the Cretien government.

Interesting Travesty piece. Thanks.

Here's something I don't agree with:

Now a prime minister who seized the Conservative brand risks being unfairly tainted by events from that party's past

Seized the Conservative brand? It's a different party. It's not the Progressive Conservative party of Canada anymore. Hel-lo?

However, I do agree with the 'unfair' part, but I have a lot of confidence in Harper. He'll play this one out with finesse.

No, it's not the "Progressive" Conservative Party anymore. Sadly, this is what happens when you want to have it both ways — have your cake and eat it too — and pretend to be a "master strategist" playing both sides against the middle.

Happily so, in my opinion. Mulroney destroyed the party for nearly 13 years. I refused to vote PC until their complete demise. It will be interesting to see how long the LPC takes to recover from corruption.

I was even happy to see the dregs of the old PC's, i.e., Garth, go Liberal.

"Now a prime minister who seized the Conservative brand ..."

Until the Mulroney-Scheiber affair reared its ugly head, Mr. Harper's Conservatives were nothing more that those "dreaded regressive" Reform & Canadian Alliance "knucledraggers."

Now, the Conservatives have suddenly morphed into Mr. Mulroney's party, according to the commentariat. How convenient.

It is, isn't it. Harper was once "Reform-Alliance", and now apparently, he's BM's best friend, love-child of the Progressive Conservatives, etc.
