A contrast of Remembrance Day tributes in the media

Good taste.

Bad taste. (i.e. the cartoon; not the Torch)

Apparently the Star didn't learn a thing.

The Star cartoon actually reminds me of how the liberals sunk themselves by that really lame quazi-attack ad over the last federal campaign where the Liberals said that if Harper's conservatives were elected there would be soldiers in our streets.

Remember how that all ended Joanne?

We didn't make that up. I think that the Star cartoon just backfires on the Liberal lemmings.

It makes the Star simply look pathetic, deserving our pity not readership.

The lemmings have got nothing else.....and we're not making that up.

That cartoon is every reason so many in this country have no use for Toronto. They are totally self-absorbed. I was born and spent the first dozen years of my life there. Yet, I am embarrassed by the never ending whining and paranoia coming out of Queens Park and City Hall. The politicians and everyone who supports them need to get their house in order before they ask for Federal money.

The bottom line is that the left-wing gang at Toronto City Hall needs to deal with McGuinty because municipalities are creations of the provinces. In fact, Ottawa doesn't even have a mechanism to transfer money to cities.

But, of course, it's easier to whine to Ottawa.

The ROC is really tired of hearing how Toronto is the economic engine of this country. That is changing folks.

It seems to me that some Torontonians, including Toronto Star journalists and cartoonists really do have to get out more. They have the freedom to express their tripe because of the lives sacrificed by others, both in the past and present.

It didn't used to be that way. My father was the first recorded Candian paratrooper to land in France on D.Day and as a former Star journalist, his story and photo (in addition to a photo of my grandmother with me on her lap holding his photo) were splashed across the front page. That was 1945. They were proud of the veterans then. Yet, what they have become is such a shame!

Issues like these make my blood boil. The cartoon implies that Prime Minister, Stephen Harper has absolute control over the Canadian military and would use them against our own citizens and cities. That is completely absurd! It is ten times worse than the Liberals “Soldiers in Our Streets” political ad during the last federal election campaign.

I knew that the Toronto Star was slanted more in favour of the progressives, but to actually play cheap politics on the backs of our dead soldiers on the eve of Remembrance Day is just sick.

It's November 11th - can you not hold back the hate and partisanship for one day - at least for those who fought against a man obsessed with hatred (WWII). Have you forgotten or do you not care.

If you had any class or sensitibilities you'd remember them today and let go of your own hatred and partisanship for one day.

Sickos

Joanne (and her fans) have always been on auto-pilot. Second verse, same of the first: "Let's all hate TO-RON-TO, 'cause hatin's what we do. If we didn't hate TO-RON-TO, we'd just be hatin' YOU!"

the apology for skewering with Rememberance Day shouldn't be from this blog or its participants but from the Toronto Star.

Like Sandy I was born and raised in Toronto in the 1950s through to the 1970s. It's become an embarassment.

When I moved away I have never looked back. I visit very infrequently because quite honestly, the last time we took our family to visit Toronto, we were disgusted by the dirty streets, panhandlers, and how expensive it was for a family of four.

Newspapers and their political cartoons have been agitating segments of the citizenry and political masters alike since the time of Napoleon.

Get over yourselves.

Red Tory said...

Ti-Guy — Yep, it's all about HATING Toronto... because, you know, that's what Remembrance Day is for.

Give your head a shake people.

p.s. And Sandy... You were 12 yrs. old — that hardly provides much credibility in the way of legitimizing your asinine grievances about TO. As a member of the "ROC" I disagree totally with your dismissive assessment of Toronto's significance.

Anonymous said...

I'd like very much to respect Toronto and return it to it's past but I can't, nor can anyone else.

Toronto has plenty going for it. The problem is that we rarely if ever get a glimpse to what that is because of all of the whines and drones that are relayed nicely by papers like the Star.

Like the other anon. Toronto isn't our first choice to visit as a young family. I'd sooner take my kids to Ottawa or Montreal these days.

Red Tory, this is your fair warning that you are on a short leash here.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

So are your sycophants, BTW.

Red Tory said...

I'll take that as a "bugger off".

FREEDOM...

Yeah, that's what our young men and women are fighting for, right?

Freedom to spew your hate and vilification of your political enemies and to stifle dissent. That's the sort of "freedom" (*cough*) you lot want.

Apparently the Star didn't learn a thing

Neither did the CPC.

They ran their "Not a leader not worth the risk" attack ad (the one where they distort Dion's voice) this morning, at 10:38 this morning, as everyone would be arriving to park near the Cenotaph, just as I was.

CPC attack ads.

On Remembrance Day.

Just before the Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Not the day before.
Not after the laying of wreaths.

On Remembrance Day. Just before the two minutes silence.

Disgusting and despicable.

Red is right. The Toronto Star is free to be the sanctimonious, biased, piece of fecal rag that it is and always has been. So to are the various left wing trolling stains like Ti-Guy.

That cartoon wasn't "dissent", it was complete, unadulterated left wing drivel, and its defense thereof, the usual kind.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

You are excepted. ;)

Personally, I'd let them post whatever they want, short of profanity. So much the better to turn over the rocks on these cockroaches to the light of day. Every word they utter just exposes them and their brand of "progressive" screed to people everywhere.

Or you can just dismiss them. They're blithering idiots and they can't help themselves.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Exactly. That's why I haven't deleted anything yet. Every comment just gets them in deeper and deeper.

It also serves to remind me why I support the Conservatives.

Anonymous said...

You support the "Conservatives"? You mean the "Conservatives" that desecrated Remembrance Day with partisan attack ads, timed to be heard on car radios as people gathered at the cenotaph?

Disgraceful.

Anonymous said...

hey lib. supporter if you have a problem with Dion attacking himself in the "attack" ads, your beef isn't with the conservatives, your beef is with whatever network was stupid enough to run the ads during the rememberance ceremony. Guess they need the advertising bucks, eh?

What network was that by the way, because I was switching around and no networks that I watched broke for commercials.

if you have a problem with Dion attacking himself in the "attack" ads, your beef isn't with the conservatives,

Nice try with the "Dion attacking himself" meme. Sheesh. With a large enough sample, I'm sure I could cut and paste your words to do the same. It tries to make him sound like he himself cannot set priorities. You know as well as I do that in that clip he was rebuking a rookie MP who had never been in Government, let alone Cabinet.

So the ad itself is dishonest, but that is to be expected from attack ads. No beef there.

your beef is with whatever network was stupid enough to run the ads during the rememberance ceremony. Guess they need the advertising bucks, eh?

You have been reading my parody at RT's, and confusing it with what I said here. Here, I have not stated it was during the ceremony. Find my first comment here, it says before the ceremony.

But that wasn't the idea of your saying that, was it? I knew it wouldn't be excused as "deliberately inappropriate" like Kate's words are today, and I knew it wouldn't be an "it's a joke" excuse. I figured it would be "someone else's fault", the one you just tried.

Do you seriously expect anyone to believe it was just a scheduling accident? You think we're all stupid?

Well, maybe you do. Supposedly Ontario is full of "lemmings" which is stereotyped as a singularly stupid animal.

What network was that by the way, because I was switching around and no networks that I watched broke for commercials.

Read the earlier comment, it was a radio ad. Usually they aren't referred to as "networks". And it was 20 minutes before the ceremonies, timed to play in your car just as you are parking near the Cenotaph, as I was.

What is funny about commies though is that they glorify the war machine that is Russia or China though? Hypocrisy? (real conservative)

Anonymous said...

um, don't look now lib. supporter but judging by his record as the leader of your party I'd say that Dion really, REALLY has trouble in the priority setting dept.

we didn't make that up.

I wish I knew who it was that said that, however, whoever did had it absolutley correct.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Thanks for that, Lycan.

I just googled it, and it seems to be attributed to everyone from Mother Theresa to various military sources to anonymous.

Good quote, in any case.

Red Tory said...

I love how the commenters are anonymous recreants. Speaks volumes.

And yet again your comment policy is shown to be a complete hypocritical sham. You claim not to want people to personally attack one another, but are more than happy it seems to let "Kai-Wolf" call people "blithering idiots" and "cockroaches."

Hypocrites and cowards. These are the people proud to support the Conservatives.

It is to laugh.

Anonymous said...

oi.

not using this to excuse it, but both sides do it. Look at ti guy on your blog, or jackie chan's left hand on garth's. Both are quite vocal in their smears toward people who do not hold the same view, yet both Garth and you allow them to do so.

It's human nature to find commonalities (political affiliation) and ignore behavior that one would chastise if it were committed by someone on the "other side".

to say that this is exclusively a trait of the right is...to laugh.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

to say that this is exclusively a trait of the right is...to laugh.

Exactly. At least I don't allow comments to stand where the c*nt word is thrown at female guests (or said blogger uses it himself).

Red Tory said...

Tori — There’s an important difference. I don’t pretend to police the comments that are made on my blog, nor do I have a comment policy of any sort (at worst, I frown a bit when some right-wingnuts gratuitously start slagging women, use the c-word or start issuing malicious threats). I expect people to behave like adults and be self-regulating in their behaviour (a rather “conservative” concept, one might say).

Red Tory said...

Joanne — If you were more forthright, you might note that the c-word most frequently comes from right-wing trolls. Yes, I have employed it myself from time to time, but very sparingly. Profanity is surprisingly rare despite there being no specific rules against it.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

I have never been called a c*nt by anyone on the right.

Anonymous said...

red,

i think you miss my point.

regardless of whether you have a policy on comments or not, I have read your blog, and jo's, and I see the exact same thing.

Owner of blog will disregard (either knowingly or not) slurs from someone on the same side of the political spectrum, yet make derrogatory comments to those who do the same thing, but are on the opposite end of the spectrum.

No judgement value, just an observation and a comment on human behavior.

As for the use of colourful language, I tend to think that there are more important predictors of the behavior than what politcal affilation one subscribes to.

Red Tory said...

Joanne — Your remark seems somewhat obtuse, but goody for you. I wish that I could say the same, but I’ve had that word used to describe me and “liberals” in general on numerous occasions by right-wing “conservative” trolls.

Red Tory said...

Tori — Sorry, but you can’t see “exactly the same thing” because I allow a remarkable amount of stuff to simply slide, whereas Joanne has boasted of her deletions and is arbitrary at best in the enforcement of “policies” about how people should behave towards one another in the comments. She’s obviously a lot more censorious than I am when it comes to matters of profanity for one thing. I’m not always fair and will definitely show favour in support of people I like as opposed to some relatively unknown whiner who raises an objection or complaint. I had one, for example, who wanted me to start cracking down on people for being “misogynistic” in their comments. Sheesh! Gimme a break. Needless to say that went nowhere fast and attracted a lot of predictable derision.

But really that’s all beside the point because what I took issue with on this thread, was the stern warning that I was treading on thin ice for some comments made that were clearly not offensive or profane, but apparently, just objectionable for one reason or another. I’ve seen this behaviour in the past as when Joanne made her desperate plea for autistic kids just before the provincial election and some folks took the opportunity to poke some fun at the way the conversation was turning to sarcastically blame their past broken relationships and everything bad in their life on the Liberal government. All of those comments were summarily deleted for no apparent reason.

Of course, it’s her blog and her rules. Just funny that for all the talk about “freedom of speech” and what not that we’re supposedly fighting for abroad and honouring on occasions such as Remembrance Day, that those “freedoms” are rather selectively observed as it suits our convenience and self-serving conceits when push comes to shove in our own personal realms. At least in the case of some people.

And who are the people who are proud to support the Liberals? Keep laughing RT. You're the guy who writes topic threads musing if those "ill-humoured" people who support the Conservative Party are fascists and thinks he's being witty when we object. You're the guy who allows his own syphocants to use profanity in order to verbally abuse people not of your political stripe or opinion. Yet NOW you whine when someone calls you a name? Get over yourself, you arrogant hypocrite windbag.

And RT, I use a pseudonym the same as you. So spare us the "volume" of your own blathering rhetoric. You're no better than anyone else.
