Confession of a Doubting Thomas

Well, the David Suzuki-mobile rolled into town yesterday. The adulatory masses at the breeding ground of environmental activism were duly awed.

The prophet Suzuki was extolling the faithful to hold the politicians' feet to the global-warming fire:

Require governments to consider the impact of policy on future generations. "Tax the hell out of things we don't want." Force businesses to recycle packaging.

The Wise Bearded One was especially skeptical of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's recent conversion:

"There isn't a green bone in his body"

Oh, Hallowed Saint, how does one exactly test for that on an empirical basis to order to prove that revelation?

Or is it thy all-knowing, supernatural 'oneness with the universe' that gives you this power?

Please forgive my recent occasions of doubt.

Amen.

I either read or heard some political pundit say to the "greens"....you need to concern yourself with electoral victories, rather than moral ones.

How fuel efficient is that big bus David's touring around in? What a hippie-crit.

Anonymous said...

If there are more than three of them in the bus, it is likely more fuel efficient than aircraft or cars. Not to mention the cargo on the bus, or the fact that his bus ride could convince many others to reduce their emissions. Dumb*ss.

No need to reply. I won't.

Be sure to tell that to Harper when he's running for re-election. Being that he's sooooo concerned with the environment and all.

I'm glad to see Dr. Susuki giving PM Harper an clean bill of health. If He did have a green Bone somewhere, that would suggest some form of an infection.

UNDER THE SKIN Suzuki is JUST a socialist totalitarian who preys on the ignorant and the gullible in search of support for his cause.
Seems to be a few willing stooges to adore the aging hippy media whore.

Poking the sacred cows again and look what crawls out from under those pies!

Lets face it he is preaching to the Raffi generation, there is no sense in taking this seriously.

Visit his website and judge for yourself whether this effort is generating any kind of enthusiasm. Close to zero comments on the blog and it looks like they quit updating it after a few days.

Its just another nice tax writeoff for the Suzuki family-run business (visit his foundation and note the family names working there)

I wonder where they invested the money to offset their carbon use during the trip? On a windmill for their summer home?

Is David Suzuki a prophet of the Lord or a servant of Satan? The lies and deceit of the enviornmentalists should give you a clue.

Jacques Beau Vert said...

Yeah, I respect Suzuki's work and accomplishments quite a lot, but lately his rhetoric has gone too over the top for me to pay any attention to. It is a shame. However, a good lesson for all, including me -- stay calm and moderate, and people will listen.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

JBG, the fact that you, who is very concerned about the environment, have lost faith in Suzuki says a lot.

Suzuki has become lost in the cloud of his own hyperbole.

I wonder how the auto workers, who appear to be hanging onto a thread for their jobs,

are taking Dion's, Iggy's and others' brush off's about the effects of complying with the kyoto motion.

A couple of socialist, elitist academics gambling with their jobs. This has to be rock bottom - and that says alot.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Biff, "A couple of socialist, elitist academics

That's it exactly. Even Paul Martin's buddy Buzz Hargrove is a bit more realistic about the implications.

And how does 1% of GST (the price of complying with Kyoto) threaten all those automaker jobs?

The bigger threat is doing nothing and the wondering why nobody will buy our cars that we didn't invest in improving.

I keep hearing that figure. Where did that come from?

The bigger threat is doing nothing and the wondering why nobody will buy our cars that we didn't invest in improving.

That could be done through incentives rather than ramming Kyoto down everyone's throats.

Anonymous said...

You mean it could be done by "incentives" the same way we got seat belts, turn signals and catalytic converters?

That figure is based on reducing emissions by 220 million tonnes. The price per tonner for carbon credits is $30 per tonne, which works out to $5 billion a year. The GST pulls in about that for each percent.

That provides the dollar figure to work with. That becomes the budget amount for investing in carbon reduction measures.

You may now proceed to talk about buying hot air from Russia. We could do that, but instead we invest in reducing our emissions, and if we are fast enough, we can sell credits to others.

Or we could plod along as our industry continues to die, while those willing to make the investments reap the rewards.

Do you drive a domestically made vehicle? I am still waiting for the domestics to come up with a hybrid. Why must I send my dollars to Japan to get a low emission vehicle?

I don't see that happening fast enough to be a realitic option in terms of Kyoto. Drop Kyoto and encourage the manufacture of low-emission producing vehicles here.

Of course, other issues enter into the problem - The high Canadian dollar; high labour costs. It's not all so black and white. Except in the mind of an idealistic elitist.

There was as study done on the cost of implementing Kyoto. The figure the study came up with was 100 billion dollars a year. The Liberals just hate to leave any money in our pockets so they pretend that it won't cost any more than the recent tax reduction.

Anonymous said...

Red and the rest of the left forgets that the Harper campaign was much more fuel efficient than the Liberals in the last election.
Who is a bunch of Jhnny come lately's to conservation?

Swift -- There was as study done on the cost of implementing Kyoto.

Good link. Where did the study in question come from? The think tank you're sitting on?

Red and the rest of the left forgets that the Harper campaign was much more fuel efficient...

First, it was a joke. Second, where did you get that from? Link? Same think tank?

Red Tory....just curious...honestly curious. Why do you call yourself "red" tory???

Anonymous said...

Red, both stories were reported in the media, in fact the plane got quite a bit of attention.

Red Tory said...

Anon -- You have a computer, go look up the term on Wikipedia.

Swift -- You're lazy. If you're referencing a study or something specific, you should provide a link. Just saying it was in the paper doesn't cut it.
