Sublime Irony

Lifesite had something posted last Friday that I missed. It seems that Gay-only hotels are up in arms about some upcoming British legislation that could force them to have to accept heterosexual customers.

The UK’s 'Sexual Orientation Regulations' will "forbid anyone who provides goods or services from refusing customers on grounds of sexuality."

A gay proprietor says:

“At the end of the day, this is our home and as a landlord we have the right to refuse entry to anyone without giving a reason.”

Seems that when the shoe's on the other foot, it can be somewhat restrictive...

Do you have another "source" than Lifesite?

(It's a spin issue after all)

I've seen "women only" accommodations, I'm sure they can go as "men only". After that, any straight males who want to stay there would likely be welcome.

But shouldn't "lifesite" (the site that loves to put quotation marks around "marriage") be all over the really good news about Rev Ted Haggard? Why Ted is now "completely heterosexual"! He has been "cured" by three weeks of therapy. But some are skeptical.

Yes, that is interesting. How can some health clubs only allow women?

L.S., by the way, the U.K. story is talking about discrimination based on sexual orientation, not gender.

That's why I said they would have to go as a "men only" hotel. Just because they're gay doesn't mean they can discriminate any more than anyone else.

They can certainly tell you they cater exclusively to gay men, and if they are reasonably convinced your party intends to disrupt their hotel with a "God Hates Fags" demonstration, they can refuse you, but otherwise they can't.

The sexual discrimination laws in Britain allow gender segregation where it would be embarrassing (who decides that, I don't know) but it covers washrooms and change rooms. They also allow men/women only private clubs, that are not open to the public.

I think the hotelier in question knows this, and he knows it is likely that nobody that is not gay is going to go there, unless they plan to make trouble (and he's covered there). But he just got $10 million in free advertising. How many people now know about his "Guyz Hotel" that did not before?

Very good point. There are a lot of business people who feel there's no such thing as bad publicity.
