Adding Insult to Injury

Maureen Basnicki, whose husband Ken was one of 24 Canadians killed in Manhattan's twin towers, has according to Michael Ignatieff simply been participating in a 'sideshow':

Ignatieff said while he sympathized with terror victims, their appearance during the debate over whether to renew the powers is "just a sideshow."

"The issue here is not whether we have or have not met with victims of 9/11. Every member of our caucus feels the grief and horror that those victims went through."

After the vote, Basnicki, on behalf of the Canadian Coalition Against Terror, said she was "very, very disappointed" in the outcome, and angered by Ignatieff's comment.

"Sideshow? I was a victim of terrorism. My husband was murdered.

"I don't like to be a victim of politics."

(Alberta Ardvark has also picked up on this Toronto Star article.)

So, I guess it's fine for some Liberals to cast aspersions at grieving Canadian citizens; seek to diminish their pain and question their motives.

However, if a Conservative MP even makes a general comment that is substantiated by solid investigative journalism, then self-righteous Liberals are allowed to publicly demand apologies.

Another Liberal entitlement, I suppose.

Oh, yeah, and by the way Ms. Basnicki, didn't you know that TIMES HAVE CHANGED???

Get with the program.

And let us not forget Stephane Dion's remarkable show of empathy for the Air India families. What did he call them again? Ah yes, "emotional"...

Update: National Newswatch has now picked up this story. Click on the link 9/11 VICTIMS JUST A SIDESHOW: Ignatieff (via Hamilton Spectator).

And if you were wondering what they were thinking about all this on the other side, here's an example - Victims; not experts. (Warning! Not for the faint of heart).

Here's another - Will the Sun Rise Again? (Jason Cherniak)

joanne,

i watched the vote go down last night.

I am SICKENED by the LPC.

For all those who stood up to vote against our safety-your hands will be covered in blood. I hope you can sleep well at night.

For Cotler and Wappel- I applaud your actions.

For me, it's so nice to know that a terrorist's right to blow me up trumps my right to safety in my own country.

This kind of stuff happens in other countries, ruled by regimes. Not Canada.

I just posted on this , Tom Wappell is the only principled Grit. The others chose to be away.
Attacking the victims of crime and Terrorism? That's pretty low even for a grit. I will start calling hime sideshow iggy.

Torian, I am very disturbed by last night's events as well. I think Harper didn't help last week with the Vancouver Sun article, but that still doesn't excuse the way the Liberal leadership has acted.

I can't blame the whole Liberal party. It's the leadership - Dion & Iggy. They are the villains here.

So I guess now everyone will be all over Iggy for saying that about this lady just like they were all over Ann Colter for saying that the 9-11 widows were millionaires and broads.

Oh, wait, that's right. Iggy is a Liberal so anything he says is either gospel or just musings and not to be commented on or reported and God forbid he should ever be called to task for it.

Don't you just love the double standard in the MSM?

Exactly.

Is anyone else having trouble with Blogger this morning? I've been having major issues.

Alright, I've been very quite cautious over the rumours regarding the Montreal Convention, but I've read enough now to believe there is grounds for a thorough journalistic investigation into what really happened. I've seen enough to believe Dion and Kennedy and Ignatieff must publicly answer questions about the convention and vote-trading.

I'm not convinced that they did anything wrong - but I am convinced we need to find out whether or not they did.

Joanne, you are doing fabulous work here on this site.

And I agree Jason, the media has yet to ask Dion
1) was a deal made to drop the ATA provisions in exchange for delegates?
2) if not, then why were the provisions dropped since the SCC has ruled them constitutional and everyone except the moonbats and the terrorists wanted them kept?

If this was the Cons instead of the Libs then this would be called Delegategate and the pressure from the media would be unrelenting and the government would have fallen already.

The MSM are finally outing themselves on this one if we have the courage to keep up the pressure.

Well I can. All but one chose to vote against the motion, so they are all equally responsible (possibly excepting those absent and Cotler who abstained).

Florence, thanks for saying that, because it gives me an opportunity to qualify what I said earlier about Harper and the Vancouver Sun story.

Molar and I both believe that Harper did that knowing that most of the MSM wouldn't pick up on the story otherwise. He was talking straight to the people as he often attempts to do, and rightly so.

The opposition played right into his hand.

However, there was a lot of acrimony between the two sides. I'm not sure what Harper could have done to tone things down, but the 9-11 and Air India families ended up being the casualties.

It's going to take a huge amount of maturity for both sides to put aside their differences and actually try to craft some kind of security plan for Canadians.

I don't think they can do it with Dion there as Liberal leader. Bob Rae maybe. Not Dion.

Molar, thanks for the kind words.

Delegategate. I love it!!!

The MSM are finally outing themselves on this one if we have the courage to keep up the pressure.

One thing people can do who don't have blogs is write letters to the editor of the Post, and discuss Jonathan Kay's great work in exposing this alleged corruption.

Anyone needing tips can read this.

I just noticed that other than a drive by, bravely anonymous smear telling us to go to the U.S., our fearless liberal supporters are conspicuously absent. I guess even they can't bring themselves to defend traitors and cowards. I'm surprised, I thought they were liberals.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Chris, I know for a fact that there are some Libloggers out there who are less than impressed with Dion.

You know it is possible the Fiberals planted the Vancouver Sun story
so they would have an excuse for their sleazy vote and disgracefull behavior
Baines has a lot of influence in his riding
