What's Canada to you?

I thought I'd try playing around with images today. Copyright laws regarding pics on the internet are confusing to say the least. However, I knew there would be no issue with this one, since my husband took it on a fishing trip in Northern Ontario a few years ago.

The National Post's editorial today is titled "Canada's Day", and makes the point that celebrating Canada is about way more than politics - So take that, Susan Delacourt!!!

In fact, Canada is not about politics at all. It is about whatever each Canadian holds dear to his or her heart.

For me that is a profound appreciation for family, friends, faith, freedom and for the wild, rugged beauty of our amazing country.

A very Happy, nonpolitical Canada Day to all!

Just noticed that the top of this blog gets cut off in Explorer. Not sure if it's because of the image, or if it's been happening all along? Any ideas from you techies out there? Thanks.

Canada Day Update: Defining the Nation - Winnipeg Sun (H/T to National Newswatch).

This is priceless, yet sadly true in so many cases:

George Stromboulopoulos, hipster host of CBC's The Hour gets the last word:

"My favourite thing about being a Canadian is that I don't have to think about it."

Are you saying that we are "individuals"? You mean we are not part of the common good, the socialist ideal? What politics you have infused into your comments!

Oh by the way "Happy Dominion Day (ok Canada Day)" to all my fellow Canadians from West Coast Teddi - living the good life on Vancouver Island and being the last to see the sun set on this beautiful land.

Thanks for the photo & link to the NP editorial, Joanne. Happy Dominion Day* to everyone.

* I'm glad I'm not the only one who still at least occasionally thinks of it by that name.

Brian, your comment reminded me of a similar discussion last year at this time. I dredged up the old post here. My what a difference a year makes!

Canada Day - Isn't that sometime around the July first long weekend? Personally I never liked Dominion Day it always smacked of Upper Canadian elitism. You might have to be an ol' prairie boy to fully understand. Cheers

Some things haven't changed, Jo. My daughter has at least one gold medal (shotput) this weekend and possibly two but I haven't heard her discus results yet. Unfortunately, I'm not with her as the meet is in Kelowna and I had to work... but she'll be back tomorrow.

Mac, that's awesome! What a remarkable young woman. Please pass on my congrats to her.

She's having a wonderful track & field season. Every meet she's participated in, she's come away with gold in one event or another... and multi-gold in some meets... plus she's broken at least one meet record in every meet. Hard work pays off!

Mac, you must be so proud, and rightly so! Please keep us posted.

Almost too proud to say!

Gold in discus (broke the meet record) and gold in shotput (broke the meet record) plus a personal best in javelin which netted her a bronze medal. Overall, a great weekend but she didn't break the provincial record like she'd hoped.

Her next meet is in two weeks time.

Unreal! Good for her. Well, you must be having a fantastic Canada Day weekend, Mac!
