It's called "The Weather", Stupid!

I am emerging from my self-imposed 'reading retreat' because I just couldn't let this pass.

Apparently there were rallies in major cities across Canada yesterday, calling for peace in the "War on Terra". (Can you believe it?)

Anyway, the rallies were supposed to be non-partisan, but many politicians seized the opportunity to push for Kyoto compliance (Post - "Tories Knocked at Kyoto Rally"):

Chief organizer Brennan Louw said he intended the event to be non-partisan; however, local federal politicians took the opportunity to court voters and to challenge the record of Prime Minster Stephen Harper.

"I say to Mr. Harper: You have no right to take Canada out of the Kyoto Protocol. That's Canada's signature on that document - that's not you're signature," said NDP Leader Jack Layton. "We must send that message to Stephen Harper."

( . . . )

"The impact of the climate-change crisis on the world is the equivalent of war," Layton said, referencing remarks the UN Secretary General made last week. "And that means that we have to mobilize as a society and work together the way we would if we were involved in a war."

Good grief! Perhaps Jack Layton would like to take his overblown rhetoric to a protest on Mars?

Anyway, the Star tells of this brilliant protester who is firmly convinced of global warming:

The United Nations released a 21-page report last month that said human activity was "very likely" the cause of global warming and Al Gore's documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, won an Oscar.

Bill Terry, 56, said even without those recent events, he wouldn't have to look very far for a reason to come out to the rally.

"You can even feel it today. I mean we're pretty early in March and look how hot it is."

Bill, I believe that is called spring. And never mind that we've just gone through a frigid February, and I still can't see a speck of green outside. I mean, the birds are making nests in the snowbanks, Bill! C'mon.

But what really gripes me here is that the Kyoto Kultists are allowed to point to any weather at all, and call it evidence of man-made climate change, and therefore requiring Kyoto Kompliance.

But just let a Global Warming Denier even try to make a joke about the weather being cold in an effort to refute all this paranoia, and the result is santimonious outrage!

Obviously the 'Culture of Entitlement' is not the exclusive domain of the Liberal Party of Canada.

I find that link about the other planets and moons warming as well to be fascinating. I would be very interested to hear what David Suzuki has to say about that scientific data.

I think that it's a very good idea for everyone to do their best to take good care of the planet and to be responsible by recycling and making wise choices wherever possible. However, the Kyoto protocol is the complete wrong way to do it, won't address the real problem and will have negative impacts on the economy. If the economy is crippled, there will be less tax dollars to fund programs such as recycling.

There needs to be a common sense approach to this that is not based on scare tactics and hype.

How many people in Toronto? This newsworthy protest has not likely spilled over from professional protestor numbers into the kind of response the immigration protests garnered in the states. Now that was a protest.
The one thing I read said 50 people showed up in Hamilton like it was a big thing. But I guess in Hamilton 50 may be a big number considering what the Briar drew.

50 people. There was a bigger crowd at every minor hockey game in the country this weekend.

I agree, Steph. But it seems that common sense is in short supply these days.

Molar, I wonder if that 50-person crowd included any politicians?

I have to do apologize to the good people of Hamilton. It was Halifax that drew 50 people to the rally.

It was an NDP professional protest.

Meanwhile Dion was out promising to save Lake Winnipeg? From what? Bad TV Shows?

I agree with Steph that everyone should be doing his/her share to take care of the planet. And PM Harper is on the right track with the Eco-Trust announcements, a measured approach to the public's concerns. There's also a growing wave of skepticism to counter the hysteria of the Kyoto Kultists.

From a March 10 SDA post:
http://tinyurl.com/2qjx27
"Global Warming: “The biggest scam of modern times.” (Channel 4 Documentary)"

«The documentary, directed by filmmaker Martin Durkin, is at odds with scientific opinion as outlined in a United Nations report in February, which blames mankind for global warming.

In his program, Mr. Durkin rejects the concept of man-made climate change, calling it “a lie … the biggest scam of modern times.”

The truth, he says, is that global warming “is a multibillion-dollar worldwide industry, created by fanatically anti-industrial environmentalists, supported by scientists peddling scare stories to chase funding, and propped up by compliant politicians and the media.”»

Unfortunately, I could not view the video as it kept freezing up on my computer (it must be because of climate change!).

Maybe there's still hope that people will come to their senses.

I'm looking more into this Lake Winnipeg thing just because it piqued my interest.

In May 2005 Dion and Alcock announced $1.1 million to study the lake. Maybe we can ask political whore Garth Turner to find out which Liberals are studying the lake.

In this article in the Winnipeg Free Press Dion says that Harper doesn't care about the lake because he won't give the money that Paul Martin promised to spend on the lake in the 2006 election.

And then he pledges to spend more money to 'save the lake' if he is elected PM.

Gimme a break. How much money do the Liberals want to spend to study a Lake that seems to be pretty okay. Maybe he can get the Red River to stop bringing in floating farm implements from the States, all that damn Yankee rust!!

If that's the best he had when he was environment minister and that's the best he has now, then God help Greenie.

As an aside, I like the way he says Harper is paying lip service to the East-West grid- untouchable Liberal intellectual property. Watch Harper do it and that'll put paid to Lieberals talking about Liep service.

Sorry, ranting today and no time to blog it at my place. More people will read my rant here anyways Joanne :D Thanks for a place to vent.

"I find that link about the other planets and moons warming as well to be fascinating. I would be very interested to hear what David Suzuki has to say about that scientific data."

If there is scientific data showing that other planets and moons are warming due to an increase in the suns radiation or intensity I haven't seen it.

For starters Mars is not warming. It is cooler now than when temperature data starting being recorded by viking in the 70s. The world’s most renowned scientist on solar activity, Dr. Sami Solanki (who is grossly misrepresented in this article and another the other day by Solomon is his "Deniers" series) has stated that greenhouse gases are the cause of current global warming as solar activity has been constant for the past 20 – 30 years. The six years of decreasing mass at the southern (but not northern) polar cap on Mars have coincided with the Sun reaching a solar minimum. Both of which ensure that any changes on Mars are due to internal factors. What possible internal factors could there be on a planet with no life? Plenty. Dust storms, which can last for years, ravage the planet which alone can change the temperature of the red planet by several degrees and Mars has been found to be far more active than the earth with the topography changing faster than scientists had anticipated. Both of which can lead to regional instability of temperatures. Also Mars doesn’t follow the same orbital pattern around the Sun that the Earth does and I will repeat again that the actual temperature measurements taken since the Viking missions actually show that Mars is cooler now then it was in the 70s.

Next comes Jupiter. According to NASA the planet is not getting hotter but the storms are allowing less of the equatorial heat to reach the poles therefore the equator is getting hotter while the poles are getting cooler. Because the planet is so large (more than 200 times the size of the earth) and so far away from the earth, Jupiter actually radiates more twice as much heat as it absorbs from the Sun. Any change in the Suns radiation large enough to change the temperature on Jupiter would probably fry our planet. The author making the assumption that a 6 degree increase on "some parts" of Jupiter is proof that the planet is warming is completely ridiculous.

Triton is warming. This was predicted to occur. It changes its orbit over a hundred plus year cycle and now a lot more direct sun light. Why is it that other 12 moons of Neptune, or Neptune itself, are not getting warming? Oh yeah, because there has been no change in the Sun's radiation.

Ah Pluto! Warming? Cooling? Who knows. Everytime it passes by a star the observers either say one or the other was significant. Truth is we know just about nothing about that planet. We haven't even observed a complete orbit. Some scientists predict that Pluto could be warming very slightly due the fact that it was recently much nearer to the Sun in its highly elliptical orbit so they feel that they may have heated things up and trapped heat in the atmosphere. Just like it is normally warmest here at around 2 or 3 (not noon) it should be warmest on pluto after it has been closest to the Sun. So when Pluto passed in front of two distant stars in 2002 the first of which scientists thought showed significant cooling, the second of which scientists thought signifant warming. Scientists went with the second being more likely to be accurate because it matched their models which showed that it should be warming due to its orbit. Truth is we know almost nothing about pluto. But I guess when it passes in front of another distant star in a dozen years or so we can look at the results.

O/T, but for anyone who is interested, Sandy has a great post about the blogger calling for Harper to take a bullet.

Also from Gunter's piece:

"Sami Solanki of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany,... is convinced that the warming of recent years is not unusual and that nearly all the warming in the past 150 years can be attributed to the sun."

Solanki actually believes that the warming over the last 30 years is VERY unusual. So unusal in fact that he has written several peer reviewed papers showing that the data compiled by himself and dozens of other scientists has showed conclusively that solar variability was a major factor in past climate change, but has only been responsible for a tiny fraction of climate change since the 70s.

He has stated that "since about 1980, while the total solar radiation, its ultraviolet component, and the cosmic ray intensity all exhibit the 11-year solar periodicity, there has otherwise been no significant increase in their values. In contrast, the Earth has warmed up considerably within this time period. This means that the Sun is not the cause of the present global warming."

Gunter brings up this significant point:

Solar scientists from Iowa to Siberia have overlaid the last several warm periods on our planet with known variations in our sun's activity and found, according to Mr. Solanki, "a near-perfect match."

Why is that significant? Because it shows that we know caused the last several warm periods and we also know that there is no way that the same thing that caused those warm periods could be causing the current one as there has not been an increase in solar radiation/intensity. Solanki and similar scientists have shown that this warming period is completely different both in the speed of change and the cause. He has helped successfully eliminate every possible natural cause that could be contributing to current climate change leaving all of the evidence pointing to humans. And now he is being championed by skeptics when the reality is that he has ruined their best argument and they don't even realize it. Sad isn't it?

Members of Parliament declaring War - the fact that Jack Layton is an idiot is no excuse for promoting violence,"

War was declared on cancer by policians many years ago - how much violence has come from that declaration.

Furthermore, Layton - and I do not vote for the NDP - stated that the consequences of climate change would be the equivalent of a war and therefore people must mobilize against it. He did not promote violence in any way.

"global warming fanatics are not too bright and easily led by smooth talking celebrities,"

I won't argue that many global warming fanatics feel that they are right even though they have studied very little of the science. I also won't argue that celebrities have convinced many people of the dangers of climate change.

However there are a lot of people on the other side that search out any "fact" that might help out their cause. These so-called facts are very often taken completely out of context. Hence world renowned solar intensity scientists like Solanki, who has written hundreds of peer reviewed papers is written about in a national newspaper under the assumption that their views are the complete opposite of what they actually are.

It would be best if all people from both sides looked at the legitimate science out there. It pretty much all points in one direction.

"they've issued death threats to real scientists that questioned their mantras already,"

It is always possible that deaths threats are given by a couple idiots. Can you tell us which scientists have received death threats for their skeptical views on climate change?

"so Jack should STFU before someone gets killed."

A political leader should shut up? Because he was involved in what as far as I can tell was a completely non-violent protest? Not in the democracy I live in.

The Kyoto Warriors use any kind of weather they want to "prove" their point that global warming exists, whether it be a cool day, warm day, cold day, hot day, hurricane, earthquake etc.

Yet when the rest of us say that it's not too warm where we live (it's snowing right now in Edmonton), they claim that it's stupid to make an argument based on
one day's weather, or a weather "event".

I've always maintained that the crazies are those who don't expect the "climate" to change, even though I am not convinced that it's human caused or that it's a crisis.

As far as over-reaction, it seems to me that Jack Layton often over-reacts and just says _the_dumbest_things for a leader of a federal party.

As for David Suzuki, I've been surprised by how many letters to the editor there have been in papers that tell of an experience with the man who treated them with rudeness and contempt. Hardly a leader there as well.

The only leader we seem to have is PM Stephen Harper who takes a measured and patient approach to every "crisis" that is drummed up.

What concerns me though is a posting on National Newswatch that tells of a call to assassinate the PM.

Death threats have been made against Tim Ball from Winnipeg

Yes, I linked to that on the update. Shocking.

Thanks for reporting the police are on this, pgp. I could not find any indication that Ball actually referred this to the police, which is where it belongs.

I was concerned that this could be simply made up, to add weight to his claim that his views are affecting his funding and stature in the scientific community. It certainly permits one to say that he must have this big truth that nefarious powers will go to any length to suppress. Kind of like he holds a DaVinci code, and evil agents want him dead for it.

So I am dismayed this has happened, but I am most pleased to hear the police are on it. It is then unfortunate that the investigation will be hampered by the widespread reports of the content of the email. Usually you don't give out details like that, because then anyone who inadvertently reveals the confidential details is caught.

I agree, LS. The police must be called anytime death threats are made. It matters not against whom they are made, whether against a Kyoto Treaty skeptic or a Treaty supporter, against the Prime Minister or John Q Public.

Wayward son perhaps did not notice that on Solanki's temperature graph that the increase in temperature is 0.9 degrees. The acceped estimates range from 0.4 to 0.6 degrees increase. All the difference is after 1980. This is the period in which Solanski claims that the sun's radiation output does not correspond to the temperature rise. If he uses the usual temperature estimates, the solaar radiation remains a good redictor of global temperatures.

Apparantly that massive firey ball of gas that's hundreds of thousands of times the size of the earth, which provides the sole source of heat to the earth and the entire solar system (I believe the scientific term is the Sun [though the “s” may be silent]),

may be related to the earth’s temperature and its relative changes.

Who’d have thought.

Just finished reading the article about Dion and Lake Wpg.

What a pile of crock!!!

I grew up near Lake Wpg. The locals have been begging for help from the gov. for over TWENTY YEARS! There certainly has never been any from the Libs when they were in power.

The greatest threat to Lake Wpg is blue green algae, and the source has already been traced to excess nutrients being leeching into the watershed from fertilizers used in mono-culture agriculture. Researches have been establishing that for 17 years (actually, it's been a couple of years since I've moved away, so make that 19 years), but they keep getting sent back to study it some more. The watershed covers one MILLION square miles, including portions of the US. The article has Dion saying a lot about money he'd supposedly throw at the problem if he were the PM, but he doesn't seem to be saying anything about solutions.

Oh, and by the way - Lake Manitoba is having troubles, too. That almost never makes the news.

No in the study I am referring to his three graphs show a temperature change from 1900 to 2000 as 0.62 or less. The measurements are from Frohlich and Lean; Wilson. I know of no graph from any study by Solanki where he refers to a 0.9 degree temperature change (unless maybe it was converted into fehrenheit)

Incidently along these lines, in the Great Global Warming Swindle, which I watched last night, when they showed a graph comparing climate and solar radiation for the last hundred plus years their temperature line mysteriously stops at 1980 but their solar radiation lines continues up to present. I wonder why? Could this be it?
(From the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research)

You might notice a huge difference between the lines starting at 1980.
