Waterloo Region more Politically Correct than Toronto!

Well, 570 News reports that Waterloo Region has opted not to support the troops with decals; unlike Toronto, who caved to public pressure.

The Record reports that Chairman Ken Seiling worries that this would be "unfair" to other groups, and cites an Ontario Human Rights Commission ruling as his excuse. (Click Record - Front - Region Refuses Yellow Ribbon. I'll supply direct link in comments.)

Anyway, we see in the Record story that Kerry Townson is still in the news spotlight; this time with a photo. She is advocating that municipal employees be allowed the option of showing their support:

Kerry Townson, spokesperson for Families of Canadian Soldiers in Afghanistan said supporting Canadian soldiers shouldn't be lumped in the same group as "a cause" or a charity.

"We're talking about duty, about emotions, empathy and understanding. We're not asking for money. It's not a campaign to get elected. It's not about policy.

"We simply want Canadians to understand that these are men and women who are doing what we've asked them to do and are risking their lives doing it."

At the end of June, Toronto city council voted unanimously in favour of extending the one-year term of yellow ribbons on ambulances and fire trucks.

Shame on you, Waterloo Region!

Totally disgusting.

Update: Jeff Allan will be discussing a variety of "Red Friday"-related topics this morning, including this one.

You can listen live by clicking the link at the top of the main page.

Upperdate: If you join the 570 Insider Club, you can sign the Yellow Ribbon petition requesting that Waterloo Region change this policy and allow a choice. Code word is "troops".

An Envoy Explains Why (Ottawa Citizen):

"I fully believe in the righteousness of what we are doing in Afghanistan, whether for us Afghans to try and rebuild our country, or our international friends, who are there to lend us a hand.

(That all segued rather nicely.)

570 News Update: Police Say No To Support Our Troops Stickers. Yet London Police have found a way around it. Too bad Waterloo Regional Police can't.

Here's a clue. Find the members of Waterloo's council who are NDP dippers and lay this at their feet.
Post phone numbers and email address so that they can hear from those who don't like our soldiers used as political pawns.

Shame is right Joanne. Please keep up posted on the move by Waterloo's taxpayers and voters as to their move to act against such nonsense.

57% of Conservative Party members support the idea of peace talks.

I don't see what the problem is for the Region.

According to many you don't have to support the mission (the cause) in order to support the troops (people).

It's not the same as supporting other causes.

It makes sense that police, fire, and ambulance vehicles display the stickers as they share a common bond with the men and women that serve in the armed forces.

They put their lives on the line everyday in the service of their town, city, province and country. So it's a natural way for them to show their support.

anonymous 8:23am,

What the hell does your statement have to do with supporting the troops.

Exactly. And I'd sure like to see the backup for that statement anyway.

Well, we're not going to get a chance to vote them out anytime soon thanks to the McGuinty conspiracy regarding municipal election terms.

But I won't forget this one! It is a highly charged issue and they are way out in left field.

Strategic Counsel poll last week. Look it up.

Mmm... Red Tory wouldn't have been doing a bit of sock-puppetry, would he? Nah...

The next municipal election wasn't scheduled until 2009 anyways. McGuinty just extended their mandate to four year terms.

Hardly a conspiracy.

That was actually a PC idea to start with, btw.

O.K. Zac. Thanks for straightening me out on that one.

Yeah, that makes sense.

I've been embarrassed before living here in Waterloo Region (for political reasons), but never as bad as this. This isn't about politics it's about serving our Country for the good of all mankind. I have so much respect for the individuals serving today in the Canadian Armed Forces, and it far exceeds anything political. Ken Seiling (still living in Elmira) does not speak for the people of the Region. Plus his Police Chief (who needs to get his budget approved by you-know-who), does not speak for the Region's Police Officer's and Staff. We may become the only Region in Ontario not displaying this support - this is so very, very disgusting. If this decision is not reversed (and I sure hope it will be), I just hope I happen to bump into Mr. Seiling sometime in the near future....

Gerry, I'm with you on this 100%. I never, ever thought I'd see the day that I would think that David Miller had more integrity than our Waterloo Regional politicians, but they've truly jumped the politically-correct shark this time.

I am disgusted. I won't forget this.

Part of the problem may be that politicians in general are a bit too complacent in Kitchener-Waterloo.
