I hope Jack Layton is paying attention as these ground rules are being drawn up. Perhaps Mr. Layton could offer to assist in the negotiations.
Why aren't you volunteering to help out here, Jack?
Free Dominion is also asking the question, "Where's Jack?"
Well, let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he's on his way by bicycle.

Good one, Swift! ;)
Its a sad day when we have to negotiate to keep our aid workers from being executed.
Reading some S. Korean news the other day I actually was shocked to hear people frame this as the US' fault. As if the Taliban never kidnapped aid workers before the US came along right? (which they did btw)
These aid workers behaved in a stupid manner, and now they are dying. It is sad of course, but its like me walking alone into a run-down neighbourhood in Detroit in the middle of the night with a wallet full of cash and then complaining when I get mugged.
And where is the "Islam is a religion of peace" people? Why aren't grand muftis and imams from the Islamic world over decrying the kidnapping and murder of aid workers and especially the threat of murder on WOMEN!? I know many Afghanis are protesting but what about the rest of the Islamic world?
You know.. the ones who were complaining so vociferously when someone drew cartoons of Mohammed? Isn't the murder of women far more heinous? I guess not.
My question Joanne, is where is Mr. Layton on this. Busy trying to change the station on his inadequate policy of negotiate with the taliban by now espousing a CPC election promise. Now he wants armed Ice Breakers, this guy makes me laugh.
I actually think the icebreaker promise should have been kept (at least get two!) but I'm willing to accept the current plan as a down payment en route to that.
Layton doesn't want to be seen as siding with murderers and thugs so he'll avoid this issue.. until of course another Canadian soldier dies. Then he'll be in Quebec crying loudly over the futility of the war.
Jack Layton - The Michael Bryant of the Afghan war.
SO, Your totally right, he is all over the place depending on the event and what the polls say. I think the two big icebreakers would of been the way to go to, but I think what Mr. Harper did was kind of two for one deal, the size of the ones he did order are capable of double duty off the coast when they cannot get up north. These are ships that were needed to cover the gap between the MCDV and the deep water navy. I would not be surprised to see another announcement in the future concerning the two armed ice breakers but maybe he is worried about the nuclear aspect of it but the smartest thing to do is make them powered by nucs for many reasons not the least of which is they can still become ensnared in ice which would allow them to ride it out if this did happen vice worrying about running out of diesel.
