It's the money, Stupid!

Why polygamy will never likely be legalized: Vancouver Sun - Legalizing polygamy shapes up as societal nightmare.

So we will just stick our heads in the sand, and hope it goes away.

But what about decriminalization?

I read that article this morning with great interest. It points out something that I said a while back about how if the laws are not enforced then polygamy will become de facto legal.

Marriage should be a legal non-entity, that would solve all these problems.

legal non-entity?

Please expand on that. Sounds intriguing.

Well I think you'll have given them an idea here with suggesting decriminalization. That will probably happen. And without making it officially legal they still won't have to spend the money to change all of the many social and legal systems the article mentions would need to be changed if it were legalized.

That is very interesting though that there are such negative financial impacts to the government if they legalize it. I guess that explains why it hasn't happened yet.

Steph - Yes, decriminalization would take away the aspect of a law on the books which can never be enforced, and as such is meaningless anyway.

However, by not legalizing it, the behaviour is neither condoned nor subsidized by society.

Of course, I'm obviously not a legal expert. Would love to hear from one.
