Another Deal with the Devil?

According to the Star, the RCMP may have cut a deal with Peter Whitmore.

How ethical is that? Do you think the RCMP should have done whatever it took to get those boys out alive? I am so relieved that they're safe, but if this pervert gets a chance to hurt more kids, then something is wrong.

Reminds me of another deal with the devil in Ontario.

Update: A member of the McGuinty government who is actually making some sense! Maybe we should hope for a leadership review.

Another very interesting article here:

Some researchers, including Michael Seto of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, say pedophilia is an innate sexual preference, just like heterosexuality or homosexuality. Seto said that many pedophiles, however misguided, believe they are having romantic relationships with the children.

While I could make an editorial comment here, I won't. I'll let you do that.

I don't have a problem with the Incident Commander writing a letter as part of an arrangement with Whitmore in exchange for the safe return of the child. The author would know full well what effect his letter would have- which is next to nothing.

As the Crown lawyer said the RCMP doesn't dictate the course of actions which ensue once the case goes for prosecution. The details and circumstances surrounding the letter would be articulated in court. At the end of the day, the Crown will put forward a Dangerous Offender application if they choose to do so.

Even if the Crown chooses to put forward a D.O. application, it's up to the judge to approve or not. If I'm not mistaken, the judge can order D.O. designation regardless of application as well.

Given how high profile this case is, there's a pretty good chance Whitmore will be looking at the inside of a jailcell for a long time regardless.

Thanks for that insight, Mac. I hope you are right that he will be locked away for a long time. I hope it isn't in any 'Club Fed" either.

The man doesn't even want aversion therapy. He enjoys his 'little boy' fantasies. He is as sick as it gets.

Prison is rarely like Club Fed for paedophiles.

In prison jargon, paedophiles are called "skinners" for their crimes. Skinners are usually kept segregated from the "regular" prison population to just to keep them alive. For some reason, "regular" prisoners hate skinners and prisoners aren't noted for forgiveness or impulse control.

Segregated units don't normally have exercise or recreation facilities. In order for segregated prisoners to use those kind of facilities, the guards must clear all regular prisoners out and ensure they can't get at the segregated prisoners. As a result, the segregated usually spend 22+ hours of the day locked in their cells.

If you believe what the media says, Whitmore is convinced his victims enjoy his attentions. Yup, one sick puppy.

Mac, thanks. I feel better knowing that he probably won't enjoy his prison time.

"Mac" is exactly right.

As far as I know a "promise" made by police in Canada to a criminal has no weight in law. There is case law supporting the argument that it is quite alright for police to lie in such matters.

I am certain that the RCMP knew this "going in" and the letter the lawyer has in his "hot little hand" is worthless.

They would have checked that point to be sure.

I should add that in the case of Holmoka (which you refer too) the Crown made the promise...not the police.

That is an entirely different matter.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Jack, thanks for making that very important distinction.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Dennis, yeah, I hear you. Mac says that the courts are not bound by a deal made with the RCMP.

But if the courts ignore the deal, doesn't that undermine the credibility of the RCMP regarding future such negotiations during hostage situations?

There's a certain part of their anatomy that can be removed to discourage this sort of re-occurrence. As inhumane as this sounds, put yourself in the place of a parent, or worse yet the child involved in these crimes.

I agree with forgiveness, but with a bit of surgery on the side...

yes, Gerry, This would make a lot of pedophiles think twice, and most people would think that it is perfect justice for these predators, but we know it won't happen in this permissive society, where there is more compassion shown for the perpetrators than the victims.

I've been following this story very closely, as it occurred right in the middle of my drafting a letter to the Minister of Justice regarding strengthening laws on this type of thing. What saddens me greatly is that his lawyer firmly believes that Whitmore will again feel the light of the sun and taste freedom, while the reality is that he should be considered a dangerous offender and locked away in a hole for the rest of his miserable life. What is even more sad is that in 2004 the National Parole Board stated that there was a 100% likelihood of him re-offending. They guaranteed that he would do it again, and he was still released. Now, at least two more lives have been ruined in his wake. It is well past time to put this man in prison on an indefinite basis; the basic rights of life, liberty, and security of Canadian children are far too previous to allow him to be free again.

The rights of the criminal are paramount, thanks to the "hug-a-thug" Liberals.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see a pedophiles' rights group form in Canada.

Look what's happening in the Netherlands.

There's always NAMBLA.

I would have done just about anything to make sure those two kids got out unharmed. ANYTHING.

I'm relieved by Mac's and Jack's assurances.

Whitmore should absolutely, 100% be castrated. No question, no quibble, no nothing. He is obviously a sick monster, and if people care more about his ability to get off than they do about children - well, fuck them. (Pardon the language Joanne)

Joanne (True Blue) said...

RGM, there are a few things there worth discussing further. I'm just short of time right now. Thanks for your thoughts.

Jason - I'll let the language pass this time because, well, sometimes there just isn't any other way to say it! You're right. This guy is one sick puppy and he actually believes these kids are willing participants.

Jacques Beau Vert said...

Thanks Joanne. I rarely swear.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Jason, you had just cause this time!

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Southerntory, in general, yes, they sure do swing left, but they surprise me now and then. A few times they've even printed my letters to the editor!

RGM, I just read in today's paper that Whitmore's trying to arrange a deal whereby if the terms of the arrangement with the RCMP are met, then he will plead guilty so that the kids don't have to testify.

Nice guy.

Yes, I agree. Anyone who has to resort to name-calling to make a point has lost the debate, in my opinion. But that's o.k. We have agreed to keep from casting a shadow on each other's blogs - forevermore.
