Misled by MSM Again?

Here is something I just came across, regarding the CTV and Associated Press releases citing the Swedish Study about brain differences between homosexuals and straights.

CTV states ("Lesbian brains respond like straight men"):

"In both cases the findings add weight to the idea that homosexuality has a physical basis and is not learned behaviour."

Yet it seems when a colleague followed up on the report, the Swedish researcher did not say anything of the kind! (Reference: World Net Daily)

"Researcher Dr. Ivanka Savic of the Stockholm Brain Institute said of the AP interpretation of her work, "This is incorrect and not stated in the paper."

Dr. Savic "did not want to create the impression that the study proves sexual response is not learned. In fact, [the Swedish research team] seems pretty open to plausible interpretations."

Please study this carefully. Looks like yet another case of MSM either not bothering to get the facts straight (pardon the pun) or even worse - spinning it to suit their own agenda???

It sickens me.

FYI, it's "misled" not "mislead"

Slip of the key. Thanks. I'll fix that.

Why are we surprised?
They get away with it time after time because no one challenges them, but you true blue!Keep up the good detective work, you are on to something.

Wow, YOU crying shotty journalism, this coming from a person that religously reads the Toronto Star and the National Post... the ultimate in biased Canadian media.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Anon -
I read the Post and the Sun and our local paper. I don't read the Star. It is an arm of the LPC.

What's your point? If you're talking about the typo, that's a cheap shot.

kelly said...

Anonymous: Isn't it "shoddy" not "shotty"? Not that I want to get into a war over grammar and spelling, (I could be wrong..), but if you are going to correct someone, you should make sure you are a great speller yourself.

Joanne, the National Post and Global TV are arm's of the CPC.

Just keep in mind, biased journalism goes both ways.

To the anonymous dip who goes out of his/her way to correct spelling.

FYI: It's "shoDDy" not "shoTTy". OK?

This from a poster who tried to attack this blog but wound up looking like a moron.

kelly said...

LOL! I guess I missed it. Where did you try to attack the blog. I'd love to read it! Good catch on the spelling btw!

Zac said...

Meh, who cares about the spelling. I spell stuff wrong all the time (as you all probably know by this point).

I blame Microsoft Word, where it just corrects everything for you. When you move onto a program with no spell check it can be rough.

joanne, i just read your endorsement of warren kinsella. "he tells it like it is". you like him. you said it. warren also said,"
Dalton McGuinty's political home run, meanwhile, was the handiwork of two conservative pinch-hitters. Did you see the Star and the Globe this morning? Wow! Man, you can't buy coverage like this! Do you think it would be too obvious if the Ontario Liberal Party paid for the federal and provincial conservatives to fly here and loudly disrespect Dalton McGuinty on a quarterly basis?

I mean, when I hear from my Mom that she's really mad about the way Dalton and Ontario were treated this week, that usually means a minimum of 100,000 votes just came our way. Yahoo!

I'm a federalist, as y'all know, but if chilly fed-prov relations can get Dalton re-elected in Ontario, then I'm all for 'em! Disrespect us some more, baby!

Possible Fall 2007 campaign slogan:

McGUINTY STANDS UP FOR ONTARIO

JOHN TORY STANDS UP ONLY WHEN STEPHEN HARPER ENTERS THE ROOM

May 5, 2006 - Maybe I'm missing something, but I find last night's attendance of Stephen Harper at a $14,000-a-table John Tory fundraising dinner - and the attendant hand-holding and batting of eyelashes - completely, totally unstrategic. Bizarre. Saturnalian, even.

Not for Dalton McGuinty, mind you. When the federal government's honeymoon comes to an end - and they always do - McGuinty need only schedule a 10-second election-eve press conference. Here is what I recommend he says: "Folks, the federal government, who demand you pay more into Canada than you get back, are the organ grinders. And John Tory is, um, their monkey. Good night."

A nice monkey, to be sure, but the feds' monkey nonetheless. Every unpopular federal decision - every mis-step, every slight of Ontario's interests - will now be laid at John Tory's marbled Rosedale doorstep. Mean guys like me will make sure that is the case - and now we have been provided with helpful video footage, too!

Davidson - And that has what to do with the brains of lesbians?

Anonymous said...

Wow, I wasn't making a crack at the incorrect spelling. The fact that you guys are focussing on that proves to me that there is no hope for the world with Neo-Cons in charge.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Sorry, still don't get your point. You'll have to spell it out for me.

And they (impersonal) say Cons don't have a sense of humour and are not witty! Thanks for proving the opposite, Joanne T.B.

S'ok with me, as long as lesbians don't go around hurting people for fun, or starting wars cuz they have penis problems. Or not.
And if homosexuality is a learned behaviour, well who is teaching it?
Just don't start wars, okay.
Peace, love and freedom, eh?

Joanne, you may wanted to have made note of the fact that Dr. Throckmorton, the source for the World Nut Daily article you cited is a prominent "ex-gay" promoter with a gig at a rather obscure religious college. Just saying.

I don’t think the AP’s interpretation was intended to be misleading as you suggest, just more of a natural tendency to want to draw a conclusion from a scientific study to make it “newsworthy.”

Joanne (True Blue) said...

RT - Thanks for the background on Dr. Throckmorton. Everyone has a personal bias. How much it is allowed to cloud their objectivity is important. He was concerned about the findings and contacted the researcher for clarification.

You said that the A.P.'s incorrect and unsubstantiated statement is "just more of a natural tendency to want to draw a conclusion from a scientific study to make it newsworthy.”

Is that what news is to you Red Tory? Is MSM allowed to skew any story to be able to sell their papers, programs, etc?

Don't they lose some credibility in the process?

What is the point of reading a paper or watching a news progam if it is based on lose conjecture and marketing manipulation?

The fact that you dismiss this so easily is my biggest concern.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

"And if homosexuality is a learned behaviour, well who is teaching it?"

Excellent question.

You can look to our heavily-liberal education system, which plants the seeds not only of tolerance, but goes so far as to encourage the exploration of one's sexuality, with only the caveats of disease and pregnacy protection. Education against discrimination is important, but the system has taken this to a whole new level. There is a big difference between teaching tolerance of lifestyles and actually condoning and encouraging it.

Furthermore, the current attitude towards human rights actually dictates that these attitudes and educational materials must be taught in the classroom, whether or not the teacher is in agreement.

This sets the stage for sexual experimentation at a time when children are most vulnerable - during adolescence. Without proper parental input, kids are at the mercy of peers, media, music videos, movies (Brokeback Mountain) and the like. Children are told that being a homosexual is not only o.k., these days it is cool. Just watch T.V. Will and Grace is an excellent example.

Kids are open to any and all possibilities of experimentation, and if mom and dad are too busy to notice or care, they can be drawn into any direction.

Sexual gratification is an activity which produces a reward like any other pleasurable action - It releases endorphins. As the behaviour is repeated and the result is a constant reinforcement of pleasure, the behaviour continues.

-In my humble opinion.

And of course, if you get called on one of your own calls, what happens? D'you guys call this plan B? Invoke the religious demons, and launch into name calling. Do you even know what the label "neo-con" is supposed to stand for? I asked Zac that and he hasn't yet come up with a response of any sort, that I can find.

I guess that all you Neo-Commie Statist Totalitarians Big-Tent circus clowns and chimps can take the blow-back, just as well as you can dish out the trash talk, or can you?

Did I miss something? Because they never taught me that in school. Perhaps I missed a few too many classes.

Joanne, please tell me that you don't think that schools produce homosexuals, like a factory.

In four years of school, I never got taught what a "homosexual" was. No teacher ever explain what a "gay culture" was. Honestly, I don't know where this is coming from.

Is that what news is to you Red Tory? Is MSM allowed to skew any story to be able to sell their papers, programs, etc?

I don’t believe there’s any such thing as completely “objective” news reporting that is untainted by bias or spin of one sort or another. The very selection of what constitutes “news” in the first place reflects a certain bias. The media is obligated to make the news interesting for their readers/viewers rather than simply presenting a dry recitation of the facts. In doing so, certain biases will inevitably emerge. It is the reader’s duty to acknowledge this and apply some critical analysis of their own to the information that his being presented. Many on the right complain endlessly about the dreaded “MSM” whereas many on the left level similar complaints at the “SCLM” (so-called liberal media). I figure if the media pisses both sides off and leaves them unfulfilled, then perhaps they are not that bad after all.

RT - "It is the reader’s duty to acknowledge this and apply some critical analysis of their own to the information that his being presented."

You and I know that, but many don't. Therein lies the problem.

Well that's another thing those stupid liberals can't do properly.

I spent 16 years in Liberal schools, and I still dig chicks.

I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks that schools have any interest or make any attempt whatsoever in churning out homosexuals is a retard. Seriously. All schools are trying to do is make it so a teenage queer can go through a day of school without getting insulted or beaten.

And btw, see if you can find 3 teenagers who have seen Brokeback Mountain or who watch Will and Grace.

Funny how you fail to mention what great success the Catholic Church have had in molding well adjusted sexually healthy adults. Just look at Cornwall!!!

I'll tell you one other thing: I'd rather have a smart, thoughtful, compassionate gay son than one who's straight but ignorant and hateful. Or a Leafs fan. I don't know which is worse.

Joanne (True Blue) said...

jdave34 - So now I'm a "retard". Thanks. I'll add that to my list of tributes.

Well, I agree with you about the Leafs anyway, so we have some common ground.

I'll try to get some info to back up my point, but sorry if you were offended. We should all just try to cool down a bit I think.

jdave34 said...

not offended at all.

And I didn't say you were a retard. I said that if you think our underfunded and overworked schools have nothing better to do with themselves than to somehow "make" gays out of children, well then you're a retard.

I mean think about it:

50 Cent makes a music video, and 3 days later half the kids in Junior High are talking, dressing and acting like him. that's one 3 minute video.

If the indoctrination program you allude to actually existed and was as well organized, planned, and executed as you seem to think it is, wouldn't we have 50 bajillion little queens and butches running around, considering how one 3 minute video can make a million teenagers wear their shirts backwards and their pants around their knees, and schools are able to influence children for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week instead of in hit-and-run 3 minute bursts.

I'm sorry if I offended you, but your theories come off as crackpottery the minute you put any thought into them.

Zac said...

I think you should back that comment up Joanne, I was a bit taken back by it before.

I can't see how you can claim that schools churn out homosexuals. It's not something that I was exposed to in high school by teachers.

I just cant understand where your coming from.

BTW, Leafs rule! (just not this year)

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Dave and Zac - I don't really see where I said that the school system churns out homosexuals. I said that it is a contributing factor, because it is taught as "normal". No doubt you have a problem with that. If it offends you, I will blow away that comment. I am not above censoring myself.

Zac said...

It should be taught as "normal", it is "normal". Teaching kids that homosexuality is normal prevents kids from being savagly bullied until, like in the note that I posted yesterday Joanne, some commit suicide.

If we shield kids from something that exists in the world and is not going to change we alienate some from others.

There's a famous saying: "we demand rights because some are seen as wrongs"

Joanne (True Blue) said...

Yes, Zac. That is your opinion, and I have mine. As I stated in the comment, it is my personal opinion. If you find it offensive, I will remove it.

I am busy watching Mike Duffy now. It was interesting watching a Liberal M.P. speaking out against abortion.

Zac said...

Don't remove it, I was just saying my peace, thats all.

Oh Joanne, I don't even know what to say about that link. Perhaps its best that I say nothing at all.

Although I thank you for the link.

Keep in mind that it is important to teach your kids "moral" values at home too. You can always keep the discussion going at home.
