U.S. Hospital Respects Refusal on Moral Grounds

This is a good-news story for anyone concerned about Freedom of Conscience regarding forced participation in abortion procedures.

This is bad news for anyone who expects health care workers to be professionals and may be a basis for refusing to hire someone who is religious.

After all, if workers can refuse to do something legal on religious grounds why can't employers refuse employment on the same grounds.

Interesting question, Jim. So far it is illegal in Canada to discriminate against hiring a person due to religious affiliation, but the way things are going, who knows?

To jim:

As joanne (true blue) said, it is indeed an interesting question. But, if workers can be forced to do something legal or participate in a legal activity against their religious beliefs, then non-Christian workers (ie. teachers) could, for example, be forced to participate in Christmas or Easter pageants or be fired. Otherwise, devoutly religious people, especially Christians, would truly become second-class citzens in this country.

Thank you, Brian. That was an excellent point.

This seems to be a disturbing development in our society when having religious values is something that must be hidden to 'fit in' - almost the opposite of what is happening with the gay members of our society. Christianity is being pushed into the closet.

I'm thinking specifically of Elizabeth May and the firestorm that erupted when she voiced her personal views on the subject of abortion.
