Big Vast Wasteland

O.K. Back to real life where things are a bit less controversial...

Is it just me or did T.V. selection take a real nose-dive lately? Maybe it's just because I'm sick to death of reality shows, but I just don't see anything worth watching out there now. Is it because we are the last people on earth to still just have cable? Is satellite that much better?

There used to be some excellent shows that I would look forward to watching faithfully. Then suddenly they just ended. Poof!

I watched the final episode of Third Watch to the end before I realized it was the last one. I mourned the loss of Judging Amy. Joan of Arcadia was just catching on when they pulled that one. Good quality programs. Gone. All that's left are brain-dead comedies that have gay people prancing around or boomer parents trying to look cool while their smart-aleck kids outmaneuver them every episode. And speaking of gay, if I see one more commercial for Brokeback Mountain where those two cowboy dudes gaze romantically into each other's eyes, I'm going to upchuck my popcorn! (Oh-oh.. There I go getting into trouble again!)

Please, is there anything left worth watching? Which shows were you sorry to see end?

Sorry, I'm not with you on this one. I love four reality shows and that is more than enough to adequately distract me from the things I should be doing instead of watching TV! I'm so happy that Survivor is back, and soon I'll be watching Apprentice and Amazing Race when they start up again. I also love to catch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition whenever I can.

That's great, Steph. It's good to have a few shows to look forward to. I forgot to mention that I am hooked on 24. But please, Kiefer, drop the commercials!!!

I agree with you Joanne that TV has taken a nose dive. We have satellite with the movie channels and I STILL have trouble finding something worthwhile. I do like the Amazing Race, I have grown slightly tired of Survivor (although I will still tune in if at home) and oddly enough, I got hooked on Apprentice recently. However, I don't think I can stomach any more reality shows - the Bachelor, for example, is embarrassing to watch - so I don't. (I do have to admit to watching Super Nanny occassionally!) I love a good comedy and can attest to the fact that Corner Gas is truly funny! Give me a good comedy that doesn't have the "obligatory" gay person/couple in it and I'm happy.

Good point about Corner Gas, Kelly. And no kidding about the token gay person! In the case of a comedy like Will and Grace, you'd have more trouble trying to find the token heterosexual!

I have to agree with Steph on this one, I am addicted to reality shows. But also there are some good shows on TV, such as 7 th heaven which I am also addicted to. I think this show has to be one of the only shows on air still that has a moral to it, and its a Christian show. I do agree however that it is harder and harder to find good shows to watch, when I was a kid it was all about the full house, giligans island, and the wonder years. Those were good shows! (as I write this I am eating a bad of chips and watching the MTV music awards.. how sad)

*LOL* Thanks, Jennifer! Great to hear from you. Maybe I'll give that 7th Heaven a try. If it's got any moral value at all, it probably won't be on long, so I'd better catch it now!

It's been on for a long time.. I use to watch it when I was young too. I think probably close to 10years. It's on Monday nights at 8 on the WB... mom thinks it got hoaky, but I still love it!

Yeah, 7th Heaven is a great show. I can't believe how long it's been on. I like to catch it when I notice that it's on.

I loved "Everybody loves Raymond" and I still watch a Seinfeld episode every now and then. The only problem was there were episodes that were inappropiate for young children. But I look back and remember, "I love Lucy" and "Jackie Gleason" and realize what great comics they were and the whole family could watch them.

Yeah, I Love Lucy and Jackie Gleason were classics. I also loved "The Beverly Hillbillies." That kind of innocent comedy is long gone. Too bad.

I wonder if people years from now will look back on anything from our era and say what great programs they were, and how innocent compared to what will be considered appropriate then? Now there's a scary thought!

Or will there be a huge shift back towards decency and wholesomeness? How far can things go?
