Brenda Martin - Contrast of opinons
Hunter has a great post up contrasting the opinions of Dan McTeague vs. Bill Graham on the matter of Brenda Martin. I highly recommend reading it if you have any interest at all in this matter.
CanWest publishing seems to be particularly championing Brenda's cause. See today's editorial in the Edmonton Journal and also this report by Charles Rusnell in today's Ottawa Citizen.
The Journal laments:
Charles Rusnell reports in the Citizen:
I think it would help all concerned if Bill Graham could make a quick trip to Mexico and give Brenda Martin a reality check in person. She does seem to listen to Liberals, after all.

Still, it's impossible to not be touched by the images of ravaged Brenda Martin we're presented with daily. Through the diligent reporting of the Journal's Charles Rusnell, we've gotten to know the woman better than most Canadians.
Charles Rusnell reports in the Citizen:
"I can't believe that my government would stand by and let them railroad me," Ms. Martin said.

It would do a lot of good if Bill Graham would also talk to Charles Rusnell and give him the facts of life.
In the mean time Rusnell continues to tell Canadians he knows Martin is not guilty, because the convicted crook and swindler Alyn Waage has sworn an affidavit saying she is innocent, from his jail cell.

Did the Mexican judge issue a written judgment? That's what Canadian judges do when they take a case under advisement. If so, it should make for fascinating reading.

Brenda Martin and her supporters should consider themselves lucky, if this report is true:
http://guadalajarareporter.com/
"BREAKING: Brenda Martin sentenced to 5 years
A Guadalajara judge has sentenced Canadian Brenda Martin to five years in prison and fined her 35,850 pesos for her role in a investment scam operated out of Puerto Vallarta.
***Rebecca Roth, a US citizen also charged in connection with the case, was also found guilty and sentenced to nine years.***
Unfortunately, the rest of the story is for subscribers only.
Of course, it depends on the charges levelled at Ms. Roth, as well as whatever proof the authorities have.
I still maintain both sentences may have been hardened by the Mexican authorities to show the world who's in charge.
Under such media spotlight there was pressure for them to stick to their guns rather than cave in.

Gabby...very astute of you. Have to admit..I didn't really think of it that way, but you're absolutely 100% right.

Thanks for the link Joanne. Graham is a class act.
Gabby, I think they might have got their story here. This guy wrote a book about the whole affair. He claims Brenda Martin turned in Rebecca. He was involved in the whole mess. Interesting read.

The more we read about Brenda Martin don't you get the impression that the more you learn about her the more her character seems to fit the mould of the character she is accused of being.
From what we have read doesn't she sound like a fraud and a con artist by her actions that would be capable of what she is accused of.

Graham was a class act yesterday on MDL. I don't know if anyone else noticed that Tonda tried to her hardest to get Bill to be partisan and smear the goverment but he just told it like it is. To me she seemed kinda disappointed when he didn't bite.
McTeague is another story altogether.
He seems to like to be in front of a camera every chance he can get.

Hunter, when you say "This guy wrote a book about the whole affair" I don't know which guy you're referring to.
Are you referring to Charles Rusnell, the journalist who has been keeping this story prominently alive?
Or are you referring to Roger Harrison, the author of "The Wanted and the Unwanted"?:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/mexico/martin-timeline.html
http://tinyurl.com/6zotpa
“Also in 2005, Albertan Roger Harrison publishes a fiction novel based on his unwitting involvement with Tri-West, called The Wanted and the Unwanted. The book includes characters based on many of the major players in the scam but no likeness of Martin.”
The part I question in that CBC report is "characters based on many of the major players in the scam but ***no likeness of Martin***"
I haven't read the novel, but did read through all the postings on the website you referenced when I first saw the link a few weeks ago; there it was suggested one of the fictional characters was indeed based on Brenda Martin, a character named Sandra, if memory serves.
However, when I went back to the link today, prompted by your mention of it, I notice there's been some updates, including this about Rebecca Roth, also accused of money-laundering:
" April 21, 2008:
American media is finally waking up to the plight of Rebecca Roth, held in the same jail as Martin under the same specious charges. Canadian media has no interest in Roth, irrespective of whether Martin turned her in for lenient treatment or a reduction of her sentence. In fact it would obviously have damaged public perception of Brenda had it been common knowledge that she is accused of shopping Rebecca. I am now receiving emails on a regular basis from Americans and Canadians alike asking who Rebecca is, why nobody has heard of her when everyone has seen Brenda Martin on tv every week for the past two months, and what the Americans are prepared to do for her. For every television shot of Brenda becoming alternately irate and solicitous with both the media and the government, there is Rebecca quietly waiting her turn for fair treatment."

Why Gabby..?
Because it doesn't help promote the "story" that the Canadian MSM are behind.
As i said right from the start ... when the smoke clears here there will be nothing left but the LIberal stink!

Trying to tie this to the current govt is crazy. Yes she was arrested in Feb 2006, but are you not only arrested after the fact. How long was she investigated before her arrest, when did the offence happen, certainly not in the week or two after the election. Whatever she did, was done on the liberal watch. Did they know she was under investigation, did they try to help during that time. Or, had they never heard of her till recently. How long had the consulor people been employed, bet it was before the election, again on the liberal watch. They would have been following rules and procedures put in place by liberals. So again Iggy is right, You didn't get it done liberals.

So why haven't all her supporters come fwd with the money to pay her fine, especially liberal mouthpieces. Why should taxpayers be on the hook for her fine.
These supporters have supposedly raised money for her legal expenses, so why can't they pay her fine.
Now there is a story out that the govt is keeping her in Mexico because of red tape.
This lady is going to be trouble once she gets back to Canada.

I know. I'm reading all kinds of conflicting stories, but the bottom line seems to be that the government will 'loan' her the money.
It's disgusting. I'm going to be either updating this post or doing a new one later, but start with this Record editorial.
